Dear friends in Christ,
I just arrived home after two phenomenal weeks at Suttle Lake Camp. The first week I was with 3-5 graders and the second week was with 1-3 graders. Our theme was Creation Speaks, and we explored the natural world, experiencing God’s light, being refreshed by water, celebrating our kinship with animals, and growing in our role as stewards of Creation.
I’m always delighted to see campers grow in their faith as well as their confidence over a week of camp. Our community grows from a timid herd of youngsters to a vibrant, thriving group of leaders trying new things and helping their fellow campers. We learned a variety of ways to pray and sing grace before each meal. We expanded our skills in kayaking and archery. Campers created beautiful crafts that reminded us of God’s amazing love for all of Creation. Throughout our time together we grew closer to each other and closer to God.
By the end of the week campers knew they are beloved children of God, created in God’s image and called to care for Creation. As we stargazed on the last night of camp we saw a few shooting stars, a “first” for some of the campers! What a joy to share one of God’s holy moments with children!
As you enjoy the last few weeks of summer, I hope you will pause and marvel at the beauty of God’s Creation. There is so much to be noticed and experienced in nature. Reflect on the goodness of Creation and the very goodness of each one of us being created in God’s image. Thanks be to God!
Peace,
Carol+

Further Reflections from the 80th
General Convention
|
|
The 80th General Convention was historic in so many ways. For the first time, the House of Deputies is led by two Women of Color. This means with the Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, all the presiding officers of The Episcopal Church are People of Color, the first time in our history.
Resolution A059 was adopted to amend Article X of the Constitution of The Episcopal Church. If the change passes a required second reading at the 81st General Convention in 2024, Article X would define the Book of Common Prayer as “those liturgical forms and other texts authorized by the General Convention.” That means liturgies that are not in the current prayer book such as same-sex marriage rites and gender expansive liturgies, could be elevated to “prayer book status”. The resolution is about acknowledging that common prayer is evolving and it creates a framework for that evolution to happen.
Racial justice was at the front and center of GC80. The Presiding Officers’ Working Group on Truth-Telling, Reckoning, and Healing presented its report. The Working Group began with the premise that “The Episcopal Church has spent decades passing resolutions and developing programs to address the historic racism that infects our structures and systems, and that the people most oppressed by our collective failure to act in meaningful ways are uninterested in another effort that has no urgency, no requirements, and no consequences.”
Many more details of the work of our General Convention can be read here.

Fall Iconography Classes
Trinity Iconography Institute is in its 26th year offering instruction in the sacred liturgical art of Iconography. Icons are painted prayer. At the Institute, we work to preserve and recreate this tradition, teaching students how to pray and paint in the ancient medium of egg tempera just as in early Christian times. We provide the icon board, made by hand with powdered marble and rabbit skin glue, as well as the natural earth and mineral pigments sourced from Zecchi’s in Florence, Italy, as this art store offers a historic palette, which is why the Uffizi chooses them for conservation of the world’s masterpieces. Students in our program begin by writing the Holy Face of Christ, as Christ underlies every icon, completing it in 14 weeks, no prior art experience is required. Come join us this fall!
If making "art" seems intimidating, you may be reassured by the knowledge that icons are painted prayer. You will find more specific information here. Click on the CLASSES tab and scroll down for this fall's offerings.
