What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people in the U.S. who are 65 and older. Medicare has also been extended to persons under age 65 who receive disability benefits from Social Security or those with End-Stage Renal Disease.

How does Medicare work?

You have options in how to get your coverage. Once you enroll, you need to decide how you will get your coverage. There are two main ways:

Original Medicare - Original Medicare is coverage managed by the federal government. Generally, there's a cost for each service.

Medicare Advantage - Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called "Part C" or "MA Plans," are an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. They are offered by private companies approved by Medicare.

What are the parts of Medicare?

Part A (Hospital Insurance) Covers

  • Inpatient hospital stays
  • Care in a skilled nursing facility
  • Hospice care
  • Some home health care

Part B (Medical Insurance) Covers

  • Certain doctors' services
  • Outpatient care
  • Medical supplies
  • Preventive services

Part C ( Medicare Advantage Plan)

Also known as a Medicare private health plan. The most common types of MA plans are:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs)
  • Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS)

Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Medicare drug coverage helps pay for prescription drugs you need. To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a Medicare-approved plan that offers drug coverage.

Senior Center

Keller Senior Activities Center

The City of Keller opened a new Senior Activities Center in January 2022, serving residents 55 years of age and better. By tripling its operational square footage, the city has been able to add programming to reach more of the senior community through health and wellness classes, trips, special interest classes, special events, a popular meal program, social components, and more. Providing services to a growing population, the new facility is essential to ensuring individual, social, and economic value.

Amenities in the new 21,210-square-foot center include traditional senior program spaces such as arts and crafts, gaming/billiards, a classroom, lounge space, a small fitness room, and flexible multipurpose rooms with a kitchen and courtyard. The new center also offers a gymnasium striped for basketball, volleyball, chair volleyball, and three pickleball courts with multipurpose flooring to accommodate other activities and special events. Situated in Johnson Road Park, the facility shares its site with the Keller Public Library, a large playground, and a loop trail with proximity to senior living facilities.

Alongside the city's new amenities, its members rely on KSAC recreation programs and events to enhance their desire for self-education, community connection, and opportunities that allow for a sense of belonging. Most program offerings are free of charge or low cost, led by volunteers, or sponsored by outside organizations, and are held daily, weekly, or monthly. Mid-Cities Care Corps is now “Serving Our Seniors

We will always be Mid-Cities Care Corps at heart, but a new “doing business as” name makes it ever so obvious what we do as an organization for our community. We serve seniors!

On July 27, 2022, we held a ribbon cutting and open house to announce the name change. Approximately 150 of our chamber friends, city officials, supporters, volunteers, staff, and board members came out to help us mark the occasion. Special thanks to everyone that attended. We are so excited and hope you will be too.

Our mission remains the same, to preserve the independence and well-being of our senior neighbors in Northeast Tarrant County by providing help, hope and healing through our programs.

SOS Programs include:

  •  Transportation to routine medical appointments and critical errands, such as the grocery store or the pharmacy;
  • Helping Hands providing minor home repairs, safety installs, lawn, and tree care; and,
  • Social Outreach to expand social networks and eliminate isolation through phone/visiting friends, a monthly luncheon and monthly card program.

Congratulations

We congratulate the Tarrant County Historical Commission on receiving the Texas Historical Commission’s 2021 Distinguished Service Award for their outstanding preservation work accomplished during the 2021 service year!

Each year, the Texas Historical Commission administers the Distinguished Service Award to recognize County Historical Commissions (CHC) that demonstrate exceptional service to preserve Texas’ heritage. The award is given to CHCs which document their service and dedication to the preservation through annual reporting submitted to the Texas Historical Commission each January and February for the previous year of service. The CHCs are made up of unpaid county appointees who reported more than 284,000 volunteer hours in 2021 towards the preservation of Texas’ historic assets. The CUC contributions include the preservation of countless historic buildings, artifacts, documents, and other components of Texas’ rich history.

This award recognizes the Tarrant County Historical Commission for the work they accomplished in their substantial preservation efforts that led to a greater understanding of state and local history. These efforts also promoted stewardship of our cultural and historic resources, encouraged economic development within urban and rural areas of our state, and generated interest in the history and character of Texas.
