Last month we announced the release of a new book, Understanding and Treating Sleep Disturbances in Autism, which is now available from Jessica Kingsley Publishers. The book consists of chapters written by leading experts in the autism field, offering a professional understanding of the impact of sleep problems on autistic people.

Sleep disturbances often impact people with autism and their entire families. This book provides detailed information about the various ways to evaluate sleep issues as well as how to treat them.

This is the third book in a series about understanding and treating various symptoms and behaviors associated with autism. The other two books include self-injurious behavior and anxiety.

Research Updates

From ARRI: Psychiatric diagnoses common in young women with autism

Young women with autism are hospitalized for psychiatric conditions at a much higher rate than women without autism, according to a new study. The findings of the study were reported by Miriam Martini at the annual meeting of the International Society for Autism Research (INSAR) in May.

From ARRI: Infections occurring during childhood may raise likelihood of autism, intellectual disability

There may be an association between childhood infections and subsequent diagnoses of autism or intellectual disability, according to a recent large-scale study.

ARI & WAO Webinar summary: Understanding and Treating Challenging Behaviors

Learn about the causes of challenging behaviors and how to reduce them from a panel of experts. This three-part webinar covers challenges when your son or daughter is experiencing a difficult time, a discussion of various biological and social reasons for challenging behaviors, and teaching children with autism how to communicate their wants and needs. This was a joint presentation by ARI and The World Autism Organisation

Webinar summary: Autism and Eating-Related Behaviors

Gregory Wallace, Ph.D., discusses eating-related behaviors in autism. He examines potential drivers of food neophobia and presents novel studies on the cognitive/behavioral correlates of eating in the absence of hunger. Dr. Wallace highlights limitations to current research and the need for longitudinal studies. The presentation concludes with a Q&A discussing a variety of topics including picky eating, GI difficulties, and anorexia.
