10550 Ray Road, Ponte Vedra, FL 32082                           904-547-8300 - Main Office
Office Hours: 8:30am to 4:45pm
From Mrs. Kunze
Happy Friday!

Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year, Nicole Baran, and Rookie Teacher of the Year, Herrick Smith.

Ms. Baran has been teaching AP Calculus and IB Math at Nease for 6 years. A colleague wrote, “Her enthusiasm for her subject is refreshing and even rubs off on her students. She keeps the atmosphere in her classroom fun – which is very important when teaching advanced math topics. She builds relationships with her students and provides the caring support (and tough love!) they need.”

Mr. Smith has been teaching Ceramics, including AP & IB 3D Art at Nease for 2 years. He is a Nease alumni, which helps with his connections to students as he knows the Nease culture. A colleague wrote, "Herrick’s positivity and drive to further the visual arts at Nease has been present since his first day in the classroom 2 years ago. He has worked hard to create the content taught in the Ceramics and IB courses at Nease, bringing in his experience in higher education and making it applicable to the high school art student. Herrick leads his classroom with kindness and compassion, creating an atmosphere where students want to create their best work and strive for greatness."

Congratulations to them both as they represent Nease in the district competition!

October is Financial Aid Month!
On October 1st, the Bright Futures and FAFSA applications opened up for students who plan to attend college in the 21-22 school year. During the month of October, Counselors have been working hard to help all of our seniors get the financial resources that they need for college.

We still have one more financial aid event coming up:

October 28th: FAFSA Day! Counselors will assist students with FAFSA questions during excel in M107.

Senior Individual Appointments:
Counselors are wrapping up meeting with seniors individually. We are making sure that each student knows exactly what they have remaining for graduation and that they are properly enrolled in those courses. We are also discussing with each student what their plan for after high school is and make sure that they know what their next steps are to accomplish those goals. Students that have not met with their counselor yet should reach out to connect with their counselor to schedule a time.

Senior College Applications:
Students should continue working on their college applications if they have not already been submitted. There are several deadlines that are coming up between now and November 1st . If your test scores are not where you want them to be, now is the time to register for the next SAT and ACT. You can register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.org and the ACT at www.actstudent.org .

Sophomores:
School Counselors were in your English classes last week. We logged on to Naviance to take a Career Interest Profiler, created career goals, viewed college scattergrams, and start working on your resume for college. Students who missed the presentations can view the presentation on your counselor’s Schoology page and follow up with your counselor in counselor corner during all lunches in the cafeteria! Please have your student take this quick 5-minute survey and let us know your thoughts: https://forms.gle/x2h9EoHBR3biEPCS7

TUESDAY AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING CANCELLED!!
We are cancelling after school tutoring for this Tuesday, Oct. 27th due to the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. We will resume on Thursday.

ATER SCHOOL TUTORING!
National Honor Society after school tutoring takes place next week every Tuesday and Thursday after school in the media center from 4-5 p.m. This is a FREE service for all our students. They do not need to make an appointment or reservation. Students just need to come straight to the media center after school, sign in, and our NHS Officers will match them up with a tutor. This is available to ALL our students – distance learners included! Our tutors can work with them virtually if they need help, however, they will need to contact Mrs. Milian directly to try to schedule a virtual tutor. If a student needs other times (ie: mornings, lunch, excel, other days, etc) students need to contact me directly so that I can schedule a tutor to meet with him/her. For situations like this, a few days notice is needed. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at carolyn.milian@stjohns.k12.fl.us

MEDIA CENTER DONATIONS
Our media center is quite a busy hub of student learning and gathering. Social distancing and mask wearing are definitely a MUST for anyone entering the media center. But we are also asking for some supply donations to help get us through the school year because we go through these items quickly. If you can donate any of the following items that we use daily in the media center, we would be MOST grateful:
·              Napkins
·              Paper towel rolls
·              Clorox/Lysol wipes
·              Lysol spray
·              Kleenex
·              Plastic spoons/forks
·              Hand sanitizer
