Mother's Day Walk For Peace- May 9!
|
You probably know that Mother's Day is coming up, and with it the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute's Mother's Day Walk for Peace- perhaps you've already joined our King's Chapel team ! But did you know that the Walk for Peace is only one of many programs run by the Peace Institute?
The Peace Institute is also "on the ground" providing consistent services for families of murdered loved ones and families of incarcerated loved ones to prevent cycles of violence. Their Survivors Outreach Services (SOS) provides emotional and practical support for families in the first 24-72 hours after a homicide, and their Community Reentry Services Program provides support, guidance, and advocacy for the families of those arrested and incarcerated for murder-from the time of arrest throught re-entry. And the Mother's Day Walk for Peace is one of four different advocacy programs that promote dignity and compassion for all families impacted by murder, and to empower them to enact real change. In winter, they run the Survivors of Homicide Victims Awareness Month to educate policy makers, and their networks to support survivors of homicide and the providers who care for them run year-round.
Finally, the Peace Institute runs five training programs to instill the value of peace and provide the tools to enact it, for everyone from children, to allies, to providers, to people who are incarcerated.
It's a lot for one organization to do, and they need our help! That's why this year, the CAC is MATCHING all donations up to $2000 dollars through May 7th. Even more exciting, a generous donor will additionally match all donations up to $5000 through Friday, April 30th. So join our King's Chapel team to help support the Peace Institute, walk with us for the 25 Days of Walking, and then tune in to the virtual walk May 9th, as the Peace Institute celebrates community and commemorates those lost. Speaking of the virtual event, here's how you can help participate: Email Carol with a short statement on why you walk, and send in your sign selfies! Our team slogan is "King's Chapel Walks in Peace," please take a picture of you holding a sign with this or a similar message, and send it to Jennifer Roesch to be featured on our Facebook page and sent to the Peace Institute.Want to learn more about the Peace Institute? Then join Amanda and Carol for a Zoom meeting to learn more about King's Chapel's participation in the Walk for Peace!

"Perfect love casts out all fear," according to this week's scripture. But is that true? Yes, said William Sloan Coffin, preacher at Yale and New York's Riverside Church. The opposite of Love is not Hate, Coffin explained. The opposite of Love is Fear.
Is that your experience? How do Love and Fear interact in your life? If one completely trusted that a Loving Force animates the Universe, that you are loved fully and always, would fear lose its grip on you?
What would you do if you were not afraid?
These are the questions I'll try to sift and sort on Sunday. Until then, I entrust you to God's loving care. Joy

Madame Bulfinch's Boston: Boston's Changing Landscape Through the Eyes of One Woman
|
Susan Apthorp Bulfinch: lifelong King's Chapel congregant, Bostonian, and mother of famed architect Charles Bulfinch. Over the course of her life (1734 - 1815), Susan Apthorp Bulfinch bore witness to major periods of change and transformation in her beloved Boston, including the American Revolution which scattered her family to different sides of the Atlantic. In letters addressed to her brothers in England, Bulfinch shares a treasure trove of her reflections and observations on Boston's changing landscape in the early 19th century. Join the King's Chapel History Program on May 6 as we kick off National Preservation Month through an exploration of Boston's evolving landscape in the early 19th century. From the filling in of Mill Pond to the architectural works designed by her son Charles Bulfinch, the details in Bulfinch's letters paint a vivid picture of a city in transition. The program will guide attendees through Boston as seen through Susan Apthorp Bulfinch's eyes, and reflect on the city's evolution beyond her lifetime. Please register in advance here to attend.

Upcoming Minns Spring 2021 Lecture Series
The Minns Lectures is a series of talks on liberal religion held annually since 1941. King's Chapel and First Church in Boston (Unitarian Universalist) organize the lectures jointly according to an endowment left by Susan Minns in honor of her brother Thomas Minns (1833-1913), member of King's Chapel.
This year's lectures are by Anthony Pinn, PhD. Pinn is the Agnes Cullen Arnold Professor of Humanities at Rice University and a renowned scholar of African American religious thought. His series is called, "Overlooked and Despised: Lectures on a Humanist Re-Thinking of Biblical Outsiders."
The first lecture, "Job's Wife and the Price of Integrity", will be held on Friday, May 7th at 8 PM.

Internet Fraud - Protect Yourself
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, churches across the nation have seen a steep rise in incidents of internet fraud and scams, especially using ministers' names and targeting church members. Please watch out for these. I promise, we will never ask you to send us gift cards. We will never ask for your personal identifying information or bank account info. If we ever purport to say that we can't be reached by phone, be suspicious. Click the link below for more information on how to protect yourself and your family from internet crime.

King's Chapel's Celebrate the Earth Art Show
The Virtual Art Show, "Celebrate the Earth" launched after the talk by Bill Wilson on Earth Day. More than 30 contributors--King's Chapel members, friends, and community partners--offered images instilled with their love, respect, wonder and awe for the world around us, as well as the work of their hands inspired by nature's treasures. Many people helped make "Celebrate the Earth" and we hope that it will be shared many times with family and friends, all year long.
~ Cynthia Perkins and Kent Wittenburg.

Earth Day Talk: Bill Wilson's Regenerative Agriculture + Good Coffee = Abundant Bird Life |Watch the recording here |
At noon on Earth Day, 54 people registered for the talk by Bill Wilson on regenerative agriculture and his experience starting a bird-certified coffee business in Central America. It was an inspiring talk about how small farms can operate in a way that is good for the environment, good for birds, and good for employing people in hard-pressed Nicaragua and elsewhere. As consumers, we can all look to support such small farms by the buying choices we make.
We also want to remind everyone to watch the related movie Kiss the Ground http://kissthegroundmovie.com/. It's a welcome positive note amongst all the bad news we are subject to in the environmental crisis.
