We will Continue and How Survey

We were all part of the changes that happened everywhere during the pandemic. COVID changed a lot of things for all of us. Some things were great! Others, not so much... Even things here at St. Andrew's changed. We would like your opinion about how these changes effected parish life at St. Andrew's, and your hopes and dreams for the future of our church. We need to hear your voice!

Take this short 7 question survey about our past, present, and future of St. Andrew's. Your voice matters!! We want to hear your opinions and creative ideas that might help us all embrace the church we are now while striving to be a more faithful and fruitful body of people living in the diverse community in which God has found us.

Take the Survey

FAITH IS A STUBBORN THING

Faith in God is at the heart of the commandments. As God begins his list, He summed up all of them by the first: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” The lack of faith, it would seem, is the main sin that we commit. When we fail to fear and trust in God, it seems impossible to love our neighbor. And that is the cornerstone of all God’s commandments to us---to love our neighbors as ourselves.

In Mark 9:14-29, we find the story of Jesus casting out a demon out of a boy. The disciples could not successfully do it. When Jesus asked the boy’s father about the demon-inflicted boy, the father said, “if you can do anything…help us.” A rather sassy Jesus responds with (paraphrased by me for effect), “If I can? Are you serious? Everything is possible for one who believes.” The father then responds by saying, “…help my unbelief…” and Jesus immediately cast the demon out. The disciples inquired of Jesus why they couldn’t cast out the demon. What does this story teach us? This story revolves around what it means to have faith in Christ. The father questioned Jesus, “if you can do anything…”, and the disciples were too invested in their own selves and status to deal with the problem. Jesus, exasperated, calls everyone out as being faithless. After successfully healing the boy, Jesus tells them that only prayer and faith in Christ can cast this demon out. The sin of the disciples and the religious leaders is simply their business in looking to themselves and arguing with each other. The father was caught in the middle but eventually believes.

Jesus finally answered the disciple’s question of why they failed to cast out the demon by stating that “this kind of demon can only be driven out by prayer.” Prayer is essentially an act of faith. Like the prayer taught by Jesus (Lord’s Prayer), it is an appeal of faith toward God. The disciples failed to do what the boy’s father did. His confession of belief was also a prayer.

What does it mean to have faith in Jesus? Faith in Jesus is at the core of Mark 9:14-29. We experience the same negative frustrations in our life just like the father with his son. Life hits us hard at times. In those moments when we doubt, like the father, we can just pray to our heavenly Father to help us. We can cry out and confess to Him, “I believe, help my unbelief!” In those moments when you’re struggling with faith and God feels so far away, remember…God is near, and He is always here for you.

The Owen Project in Navajoland

There is a new idea in post-pandemic travel literature called mindful travel. Instead of thinking only of one’s own pleasure and enjoyment, mindful travel is a way to recognize the culture, health and environment of the people who live in exotic places. Episcopalians might respond by saying isn’t this like a watered down version of a mission trip, without prayer and soul? A friendly concern but not love. Sympathy but not compassion.

This October the Shortesses and the Keddals will travel “mindfully” to Navajoland to begin a mission to Navajo children. Just as mission work in Honduras came to inspire and in many ways define the congregation of St. Andrews for decades, this might become a new focus, a new way to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Initially we will visit small Episcopal congregations in New Mexico and Utah. Later we will return with laptops, continuing the Owen Project, which has been supported by our congregation and the Diocese for more than a decade. On this first visit we hope to take winter coats, bicycles and school supplies for children in isolated rural communities. We hope that people in our congregation will support this effort with donations and prayers.

If anything, the pandemic has taught us the emotional and spiritual cost of isolation and neglect. These problems are amplified on the Navajo Reservation by a painful history of violence and poverty. Please help us to address these needs not mindfully but with selfless love and charity.

Sincerely,

Mark Keddal

Nature Walk & Fall Crafts- The young and young at heart will all enjoy getting back to nature with their parish family on Saturday, November 12 at 10:00 AM beginning at McKeogh Hall. Those who would like can join our very own science teacher, John Donley, for a nature walk along the Walnut Springs Trail. Walkers will return to McKeogh Hall by 11:00 to share nature's bounty with their parish family in McKeogh Hall where one of our artists-in-residence, Pam Roitsch, will guide crafters through making some lovely Fall decor. There is truly something for everyone as the City's "Big Read" takes place in Central Park with Tracy Donley issuing the call to read at 11:30. Bring a book and continue the fun!

Dear St. Andrew's Family,

Several people have expressed an interest in mentoring at Jefferson. Whether you've told me or not, please sign up. You are needed! Here is a look at the process:

  • Complete Mentor Interest Form You can specify Jefferson! :)
  • Complete the Background Check Form & Email to acisneros@seguin.k12.tx.us or deliver to the reception window at the SISD Central Office (or to Kelly Follis at church with a copy of your driver license).
  • Review the orientation materials(Email Charlene or Kelly to receive the materials).
  • Await matching with a mentee. This process can take a little time because students are identified through a process and parental consent must be obtained by the campus.
  • Once you are matched, you’ll be given the contact information for the coordinator on your mentee’s campus so you can go meet him or her. After that first meeting, you can coordinate your schedule as needed.

I will bring hard copies of forms to church if that's easier.

Thanks, everyone!

Kelly Follis

The Christian Closet is still in need of volunteers to help either Tuesdays from 2pm-4pm or Thursdays from 1pm-3pm so families can come and get some clothing, etc.

Pastoral Care is a very important ministry at St. Andrew's. Some may think that Pastoral Care is just the ministry that takes care of the reception following a funeral, but there is much more to it. Caring for a person who is struggling with a difficulty, being present during a time of pain, praying with someone in a crisis are just a few of the important things that Pastoral Care does. In our church, pastoral ministry for the sick and dying is one of the most significant ways that members of the Body of Christ continues the ministry and mission of Jesus. Pastoral ministry is considered to be the responsibility of all the baptized.

We are looking for a new chair of Pastoral Care. If you are interested please contact the office at 830-372-4330 or send Charlene an email at secretary@standrewseguin.org
Meals on Wheels Needs YOU! Help deliver a difference! Meals on Wheels deliveries are made Monday- Friday. Drivers pick up the meals here at St. Andrew’s at 10:00 am and are usually done before noon. Volunteers choose the days they drive—it can be once a week, once a month, whatever works for you— We thank you for any help you can provide.

There are 5 simple requirements: driver’s license; auto insurance; ability to sign up online; a little time during the day; and a giving heart. Applications are available online at nbsenior.org or in the church office.
Click here for our Annual Events Parish Calendar! The calendar serves as a general overview of the life of the church.  In a sense, it is a “living calendar,” events may be added and removed, and of course, not all church events will be listed.

Twelve Step Recovery

AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meets at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings in the Youth House on Crockett Street.

The birth-flower for the month of October is the marigold. With its golden blooms that match the color of autumn leaves, it's no wonder the marigold is fitting for this fall month. Marigolds symbolize fierce love, passion and creativity.
