The Latest News From PCPI
October 26, 2020
Vol. 50, No.7
Dear Friends,

It is encouraging to see schools slowly making their way back to doing what they do best. Many thoughtful adaptations have been put in place with the ultimate goals of keeping communities intact and safe and supporting families as children grow and learn. By continuing to share ideas, plans, and lessons learned, we can help one another as we find our way through this uncharted territory.

With your help, PCPI will continue to support cooperative preschools and keep communication flowing. It is membership renewal time, and invoices were mailed out in September along with information about upcoming grants and a copy of Global Connections through Parent Cooperative Preschools International, which documents the history of the parent cooperative movement. Additional membership and renewal information is available on our website.

We welcome your thoughts on how PCPI can best support you and your school now and in the future. Please don't hesitate to drop us a note and share your ideas.

Cooperatively yours,

Dianne Rose, M.Ed.

Emergency Loan/Grants Awarded
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic that has affected parent cooperative preschools everywhere, PCPI and Jovial joined forces in August to create an emergency loan/grant fund. Recipients were selected from a large group of worthy applicants.

The Jovial Grant of $1,000 was awarded to Geist Orchards Cooperative Preschool in Fishers, Indiana, a small preschool that has done an excellent job of dealing with the changes brought on by Covid-19 and which is working to establish safety protocols to re-open as soon as it is safe to do so.

PCPI emergency grant/loans ($1,700 each, comprising a grant of $850 and a loan of $850 to be repaid within 18 months) were awarded to:

  • Gabriel Park Preschool in Portland, Oregon to implement creative ideas for using its outdoor space in rainy Oregon.

We wish all cooperative preschools the best as you find your way during this difficult period.
Filing Tax Returns
PCPI's annual filing of the 990N with the IRS has been completed.

All schools with 501c3 status must file a 990 form. If gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less then the e-postcard 990 N is the way to go. A different 990 form is needed if gross receipts are higher. The required form must be filed by the 15th day of the 5th month following the close of the fiscal year. June 30 is a common end of fiscal year date for preschools, which would make the filing deadline November 15th.
Surprise! One More 2020 Honoree
We didn't want to ruin the surprise! We had to keep this one a secret to give her school enough time to honor her in their own way. But now we can all take a moment to celebrate Melissa.
District Awards
Melissa Jordan has been the Director of Rockville Presbyterian Cooperative Nursery School (RPCNS) for the past 21 years. In addition to being our director, she is also their Pre-K teacher. Melissa is extremely dedicated to the school's youngest learners and has influenced countless students and parents in the Rockville community. The school is extremely grateful to her for the time and dedication she shows every day and each year.
