FPC Bi-Weekly Newsletter
May 19-June 1, 2020
From the Pastor/Head of Staff
Dear friends,

Last night, the FPC Session approved a document that includes recommendations for FPC gatherings through the end of June. (click here to see document)

As many of you may know, our governor recently put in place certain restrictions for religious gatherings. These restrictions, however, were subsequently blocked by a federal judge. As a result, the Session has provided our own restrictions/ guidelines based on what we know about how COVID spreads. These guidelines will help inform our community regarding when and how we will gather. They also include reasons why certain restrictions are kept in place at this time.

The approved document allows for outdoor in-person gatherings of small groups only, and many restrictions are in place for such gatherings. We trust that any outdoor in-person gatherings will abide by these restrictions, as they are put in place for the safely of the entire community.

The Session also approved the formation of a task force which will revisit this document at least once a month and recommend changes/additions to the Session for guidelines moving forward. We know that the COVID situation in our county (state, nation, world) changes daily and therefore this document must be regularly re-evaluated.

Friends, I miss you terribly and I know you miss one another. I long to be together again in the ways have been in the past. I long to stand side-by-side and join my voice with yours in song and in prayer to God. I long to see you in person and to offer signs of peace and warm embraces of comfort. I know you long for such connection and community, as well. We have already been apart too long. I trust, however, that these days will return in some way, though no one knows when that will be. In the meantime, let us find our comfort in God’s embrace, in the words of Scripture, and in the ways we are able to connect safely during this pandemic time.

May the God of peace keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of the grace of Christ Jesus, a gift for us all that never ends and cannot be overcome by a pandemic or anything else in all creation. God is our God and we are God’s people. May we rest in this knowledge and in this love.

Mindy

Welcome Summer Intern . . .
First Presbyterian Church is excited to welcome Natalie Wolf as our seminary intern this summer. Natalie is a native of Durham and a child of Westminster Presbyterian Church. (She even participated in a combined Vacation Church School with us as a child!) After graduating from Jordan High School and Appalachian State, Natalie has finished her third of four years at Columbia Theological Seminary, where she is earning a combined Master of Divinity and Master of Christian Education degree. Natalie has a great variety of gifts, and she will be serving in several ministries with us this summer, including being the point person for children’s ministry. Her position is funded by New Hope Presbytery, Columbia Theological Seminary and FPC. Her first day with us is Tuesday, May 26. Welcome, Natalie!

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES GO VIRTUAL!
  • Faith & Community –This Sunday, May 24, the Faith and Community Class welcomes Ashley-Anne Masters, noted author and the Presbyterian campus minister at NC State, and our own college student, Parker Klinck. Together, they will talk about the particular challenges for college students, all those who love them, and campus ministry in this pandemic! Class is Sunday at 10 a.m., through this Zoom link. On May 31, we will welcome Gann Herman of the North Carolina Poor People’s Campaign. Gann will discuss issues that this national moral movement addresses including systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, militarism, and the distorted religious narrative. Both the PCUSA and New Hope Presbytery have endorsed the work of the PPC. Gann will also provide information about how to get involved with the digital Moral March in Washington on June 20, 2020, which we can all remotely attend!

  • Journeys – A new book study has begun: Falling Upward, by Richard Rohr. Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole thesis of this book is exactly the opposite. What looks like falling down can largely be experienced as "falling upward." In fact, it is not a loss but somehow actually a gain, as we have all seen with elders who have come to their fullness. Sundays, 10 a.m. The introduction and chapter 1 can be read online at the following link for those who have not received their book: Introduction. Be in touch with Eric Wiebe or Andy Henry for instructions on joining the class via Zoom.

  • Lectionary – Join us each Sunday for online discussion at 10:00, preceded at 9:45 by sharing of news and concerns. May 24:  Something is about to happen. We have heard the Easter messages and the Easter reassurances, but now the words are more disturbing: "The hour has come." "You will receive power." "Do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal." What is it that is about to happen? How can we prepare ourselves for it? May 31: What gifts does the Spirit bring to you? Prophetic powers? Deep insight? Fluency in other languages? Do you think your spiritual gifts could get you into trouble? Join via Zoom. (For phone access (audio only), call 253-215-8782 or 301-715-8592.) If you need a copy of the handout of scripture readings or need the ID for the Zoom connection, contact David Smith.

  • We Make the Road by Walking – Check-in, support, and devotional on Sundays at 8:00 p.m. Join via Zoom. Contact Emily Diy if you need help connecting to the class.

  • Women’s Spirituality Group - Support and check-in during these strange times. Be in touch with Leah Graves for access to the class via Zoom. We meet virtually on Sundays at 10 a.m.

SERVICE AND MISSION OPPORTUNITIES
See Ways to Give for the many options available to pay pledges, make donations, and give to special offerings. Thank you for your continued generous giving to the church and its partners while we practice social distancing.

See Ways to Help for a list of some of the opportunities available to assist our Durham community partners and neighbors in need. Please support them as you are able.
Feeding Durham's School Children
Volunteer assistance is needed for the DPS Foundation Feast program. The foundation is partnering with local restaurants who are buying local produce to supply nutritious meals for school children and their families. Opportunities include: handing out food at schools, loading meals onto buses, and taking food (with no contact) to families. In addition, people can donate to the fund. Go to: bullcityschools.org and click on the link to COVID-19 response to sign up for volunteer opportunities.
Iglesia Emanuel Food Pantry
Our FPC congregation is earning gold stars for your wonderful, generous response to the call for support of the Food Pantry at Iglesia Emanuel! They continue to provide ample boxes of fresh and staple food for over 350 struggling families every week. This is a huge undertaking, and the needs for ongoing support are not likely to diminish in the near future. If you would like to help, know that your contribution will be greatly appreciated. Here are current options:

Make a financial donation by going to emanueldurham.org , and click on “Donate.”

Volunteers needed at Urban Ministries of Durham
Those of you who have high school or college kids looking for a meaningful reason to get up early in the morning, suggest they come volunteer at Urban Ministries. We could certainly use their help, and they would hopefully realize what joy comes from helping others while working together as a faith community. As a reminder, the 89 shelter residents are still lodging at an area hotel, so all meals will be packed in take-out boxes. UMD has been serving about 250 people for each meal, but they anticipate that the needs will be increasing the longer so many people are out of work.

Here are the remaining shifts that FPC has committed to filling for this month. Please reply to Margaret Rubiera as soon as you can, and let’s work together to spread hope and fill tummies!
  • Thursday, May 28, lunch prep, 9:30 - 10:30
  • Friday, May 29, breakfast shift, 7 - 9 am

There are many openings for volunteers to help with breakfast, lunch or dinner shifts in addition to our regularly scheduled ones. For these additional shifts, please contact FPC member Jen McGonigle
  • Prepare lunch bags containing a sandwich (no condiments so it keeps safely for 1-3 days), piece of fruit, cookie or granola bar, bottle of water
  • Or just prepare sandwiches in ziplock baggies (again, no condiments, but some protein, please)
  • Prepare casseroles for dinner
  • Donate deli meats/cheeses/bottled water/fresh fruit/snack items
  • And last, but certainly not least, send a monetary donation to umdurham.org
Stronger Together Fund is a relief fund that will help Durham Habitat meet the ever-evolving needs of our homeowners, partner families, and the Durham community during this difficult time. With over a third of our homeowners out of work, many will be unable to make their mortgage payments, which average about $650 per month. Your support will help us fill that need immediately. In addition, we face a serious backlog of critical repairs and a significant disruption in new home construction. We need your help to build capacity so we can hit the ground running when the time is right. Click Stronger Together Fund for more information.
The next church newsletter will be issued Tuesday, June 2. Please submit your articles to Valerie in the church office
by Sunday, May 31.
