WT Legacy Run Cancelled - DIY instead!
We wish we had better news, but with Covid-19 infections on the rise in the Flathead Valley, in Montana, and across the country, we are canceling the 2020 Whitefish Trail Legacy Run this year. It was a tough decision to make, as we look forward to the event every year and depend on it for our fundraising.
Still want to run competitively on the Whitefish Trail this fall?
Thanks to committed event sponsor Whitefish Credit Union we are offering a DIY Legacy Run to the entire community for free! In the next few weeks, we will announce five Strava segments of varying lengths and routes on the Whitefish Trail. Complete a segment during October 1-18, let us know or upload to Strava, and we'll track participation. We'll be giving out prizes, raffles, and offering fun scavenger hunts each week! Look for more information in upcoming weeks.
How can you still support the Whitefish Trail this year?
Donate to Whitefish Legacy Partners in the Great Fish Community Challenge until September 18th, and we will receive a % match on your gift!
OR become a Whitefish Trail Friend or Family by the end of 2020.
Support the trail and open spaces you love!
2020 has been a BIG year on our local trails. There has been a 27% increase in trail use at Lion Mountain this year compared to past years! We need your help to cover the associated increase in maintenance and outreach costs. Donate to WLP during the Great Fish Community Challenge to support the local trail and open spaces you love!

WLP PRIMARY USE OF FUNDS: Funds will support maintenance projects on the Whitefish Trail such as tread work at Lion Mountain, Woods Lake, and Haskill, brushing and drainage work, Adopt-A-Trail volunteer crew support and training, replacement of damaged trail signs, and trailhead cleaning and plowing.

WLP SECONDARY USE OF FUNDS: Additional funds will support Whitefish Legacy Partners' ongoing programs to secure permanent conservation at Smith Lake, provide recreation access on the Whitefish Trail system, and provide free outdoor education opportunities.
WT License Plates Discontinued

We are sad to say that Whitefish Trail custom license plates are being discontinued by the State of Montana since we were unable to achieve the new minimum threshold of 400 plates.

What do you do if you currently have a WT License Plate?
  1. If you have permanent tags, you get to keep your WT license plate for the life of your vehicle.
  2. If you are eligible for permanent tags (vehicle is over ten years old), when your current registration expires, you can apply for permanent registration and keep your WT license plate for the life of your vehicle.
  3. If you are ineligible for permanent tags (cars less than ten years old), you will have to get a new license plate when you renew your registration.
Thank you for supporting WLP by registering your vehicle with a WT license plate! Your registration fees have given WLP and the Whitefish Trail a sustainable source of income over the years, and we will miss seeing our WT plates around town and at local trailheads.

If you have been enjoying the Whitefish Trail recently,
we need your help with our 2020 fundraising!

Be a WT Friend or Family this year and make an investment
in the future of our local lands.

Whitefish Trail Report - Early September

September is one of our favorite months on the Whitefish Trail. Crowds disperse, weather changes, and flora and fauna start their annual preparations for winter. Each passing morning seems slightly more crisp than the last, and afternoons are near perfect with warm temperatures and low humidity. With a little over a month left until snow starts flying, we encourage you to soak up the sun while you can. Get out for a run or hike in new area of the trail you've never explored.

The trail is dry and dusty in spots but is holding up better than normal for this time of year, thanks to the occasional rain over the last month. Shaded areas like Swift Creek, upper Haskill, or Beaver Lakes are good options for warmer afternoons. Keep sending in your trail reports! Community reporting is essential to address maintenance projects and keep the trail safe from downfall.

We are excited to complete another NEW bench installation on the trail! This new bench on the shores of Spencer Lake is in memory of James How. It's the perfect spot to relax and take in the scenery after an outing on the trail. Follow the footpath down from the Twin Bridges Trailhead, and you can't miss it. Thank you How Family.

As you get out and explore the Whitefish Trail this fall,
we'd love to see your photos and hear your trail stories!
