480 Fresh Food Boxes Distributed to  Dawson County Families

Article written and photos provided by:
Erica Schmidt, Dawson County News Staff

On Monday June 8, Dawson County Family Connection partnered with Dawson County Schools and USDA Farmers to Families Food Box to bring free boxes of fresh produce to Dawson County residents.
Nancy Stites, Dawson County Family Connection Coordinator, explained that her group had been working hand-in-hand with the school system to organize and execute the distribution.
"I got the information from the school system with a list of possible distributors so I started making calls until I found a distributor who could deliver food to us," Stites said. "And I'm so thankful for the school system for letting us use the junior high school for the pickup location."
-
The distribution was scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. on Monday and operate until the boxes ran out or until 6 p.m., but the truck delivering the food arrived earlier than scheduled so the distribution was able to start early.
"We got a whole truckload - we weren't gonna do that originally, but in order to get them here on a particular day with a short amount of lead time the distributor said he could promise us a day with a whole truckload, so we said we'd take it," Stites said. "And then the truck got here early so it started out a little hectic but it calmed down quickly."
The truck delivered 480 boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables, and all of the boxes had been picked up by Dawson County families before 3 p.m.

Dawson County Needs Foster Families

There is a worry that families who were on track to become foster families  BEFORE  the pandemic outbreak, because of loss of job or other circumstances, may  NOT  be eligible to become a foster family  AFTER  the pandemic. Unfortunately, there is also a worry that  the need for these foster families will increase as availability decreases. PLEASE, if you have ever considered being a foster family or know someone who has...CALL BLAKE BOYER at 706-525-1130 for information TODAY!

There are many myths that surround becoming a foster parent and surround foster children themselves. Family Connection has started "Myth-busting Mondays" to dispel some of those myths. Our first two myths are shared below:

Dawson County needs YOU to respond to the 2020 Census!
Do your part and respond to the 2020 Census today!
Online ( my2020census.gov), by phone (1-800-923-8282), or by mail (return the questionnaire you received in the mail) - it takes less than 10 minutes but makes a BIG difference.
Census data benefits communities in various ways. According to a study published by GW Institute of Public Policy, one person in Georgia is estimated to be worth $2300 in federal funding per year. Over 55 federal programs use census data to fund services that can directly impact your community such as school lunches, Medicaid, rural assistance, food banks, SNAP, WIC, and housing assistance. It can also be used for local planning purposes such as determining the number of schools, recreation facilities, or senior housing needed.
