Hideki Matsuyama wins the 2021 Masters
Justin Rose’s brilliant opening round stole the headlines on Thursday but Matsuyama was just a few shots behind. With the winds swirling and fast greens, Friday was a tough day and then a Hideki master class despite the hour long weather delay on Saturday. In the last eight holes, four birdies and an eagle together with no bogeys put him in a four shot lead with Sundays round remaining.
Schauffele reduced the gap to just four and things started to get a little more interesting on the 15th hole where Matsuyama’s second shot found water. With Schauffele making birdie the gap was just two with three holes remaining however after finding the water on the 16th a triple bogey was recorded all but ending his hopes of a maiden major. Despite finding the bunker on the 18th hole Matsuyama showed real composure and making history as the first Japanese man to win a major.
Another stand out result from Augusta was the 24 year old Will Zalatoris, with a near perfect Masters tournament finishing just one shot back he was attempting to become the first player since Fuzzy Zoeller to win in his masters Debut.
