Nurse Bonczyk Notes
State mandated hearing, vision, and spinal screenings will be conducted for F2F students March 2, 4, 5, and 9 at CMS by a trained professional during the student’s athletics/PE classes. If your student is F2F and enrolled in off campus PE, they will be screened during their Dragon Den class. Students will be screened in alpha order so I am not sure which date your students screening will fall on.

DVA student screenings will be held at the administration building the week of March 8 before spring break. There will be more information to come regarding how to sign up for an allotted time/date. If your child is DVA and you choose not to bring them to the admin building for their screenings, please email me as soon as possible. Susan.bonczyk@southlakecarroll.edu

Vision and hearing screenings will be performed on new 8th grade students, and all of our 7th grade students. If your child wears glasses or contacts, please make sure they have/wear them on these days of screenings. If your student is actively under medical care for a hearing disorder, please email me as I will need appropriate documentation from their provider.

Spinal screenings will be performed on our 8th grade male students and on our 7th grade female students. If your 7th grade female student is in athletics, and has a current UIL physical on file with CMS – they will not be screened for spinal issues, as they have already been assessed by a healthcare professional this school year. New physicals were not required by UIL this year for the 8th graders due to COVID-19, therefore all 8th grade boys will be screened for spinal issues. The procedure for spinal screening is simple. Students will be asked to remove their shirts in order for screeners (district RN’s), who have been specially trained, can look at the child’s back while he/she stands and then bends forward. A scoliometer (a tool that measures the amount of curve in a person’s spine) may or may not be used depending on the assessment.

To avoid changing clothes at the school:
  • Girls should wear a thin tank top/cami, a sports bra, or a two-piece swimsuit top underneath their shirt on these days.
  • It is recommended that students remove their shirts during the screening
  • Students will be screened separately, and one at a time.

Parents will be notified of the results of the screenings via letter/email, only if professional follow-up is necessary. The screening procedure does not replace your child’s need for regular health care and check-ups.

If your student is actively under medical care for one or more spinal problems, or you choose not to have your child screened due to already being screened during a recent/upcoming professional exam, or due to a conflict with the practices of a church or religious denomination – please reach out to me via email, as I will need proper documentation as described below.
1.    Documentation from a licensed professional that the individual is actively under medical care for one or more spinal problems [25 TAC §37.143(c)]; or
2.    A signed form from the parent, guardian, or managing conservator that screening for abnormal spinal curvature was, or will be, performed during a professional examination [25 TAC §37.144(d)]; or
3.    A signed form from the parent, legal guardian, or managing conservator in lieu of the screening record(s) stating the screening conflicts with the tenets and practices of a church or religious denomination of which the affiant is an adherent or member [25 TAC §37.144(e)].

Method of Instruction Change
We are approaching time for you to decide if you'd like to change your student from DVA to F2F or vice versa for the fourth grading period that begins on March 22.

You can certainly keep your student where they are currently - DVA or F2F. If the current method your child is using is working well, you are absolutely welcome to continue with that same learning platform. 😊 If you would like to make a change, you must submit that request on the form we have provided in this email. (The request form can be accessed by clicking the link at bottom of this email)

*****IMPORTANT: The DEADLINE for parents to make a change will be Monday, March 1st.  Parents, that will give you about three weeks to decide if you would like to make a change and submit that to us.  We will then make necessary adjustments on campus to accommodate the number of students who will be coming in person after the holiday break. This deadline of March 1st is CRITICAL in order for us to have time to prepare for the changes.

If your student is currently utilizing F2F and you are considering DVA, please understand that they will be DVA for ALL classes. They can not come up to school for elective classes during the day. The only class they will come to school for is Athletics, and that will be ONLY for students who are on a competitive team as those practices will be held before or after school. Team practices do not take place during the athletic period during the school day; they do strength and conditioning during the class period and DVA students participate through DVA for that,   So, please understand if you are going to move your child from F2F to DVA, they will not come to campus for band, choir, art, outdoor ed, etc. All classes for DVA students will be done virtually (except for students on a competitive athletic team, and those practices will take place before or after school hours). Just wanted to be sure you were aware of that as you decide what you'd like for your student to do moving into the fourth grading period.

Our teachers and staff will continue to provide the safest environment for our students we possibly can! Of course, we can't guarantee that no one will get the virus, but we are committed to doing the very best we can to keep everyone safe and healthy!

Please give careful consideration to how you would like for your student to proceed with learning for the fourth grading period.

**Remember that if you would like to switch from DVA to F2F or F2F to DVA for your child, you will need to click the link below and complete the form.  The DEADLINE for these requests to be submitted is Monday, March 1st.

Bottled Water
Due to Covid safety precautions, our water fountains must remain off. We absolutely want student to have access to water as needed, but we need your help! Please have your student bring a “refillable” water bottle/container from home. We have three touchless water bottle fillers in the building and students can refill their bottles at any time. We do keep individual bottles of water in the front office for students who do not have a refillable one. However, these are meant to be for the rare occasions when a student does not have or does not bring a reusable one to school.

We have given out literally thousands of individual bottled water. We have had some parents donate cases of bottled water multiple times, and we GREATLY appreciate their generosity! However, this is an expense they do not need to take on. Many students who have come in to the office to get water have said they “don’t want to carry one around all day” so they just come get the “free” ones. But , of course, they’re not “free”….parents are paying for those.

Please help us out by seeing that your son/daughter brings a reusable water bottle from home that they can fill as needed throughout the day. This note is NOT a request for donations of water bottles. We’re asking for students to bring their own reusable container from home… This will eliminate unnecessary expense as well as greatly reduce the amount of plastic bottles we heed to dispose of.

Thank you so much for your help! Have a great week!

Stephanie Mangels, Principal

Lost & Found Overflowing
Lost & Found is overflowing again! Please have your student check it for any missing clothing items, shoes, books, notebooks, lunch boxes and water containers. Clothing items will be donated on Friday, March 12 (before Spring Break) and lunch boxes and water bottles will be disposed of at that time. It is very helpful if lunch boxes and water containers are labeled with the student’s name. This way we can call students to the office and try and return items before they are disposed of or donated

There is a separate Lost & Found at the Front Desk for more valuable items (jewelry, laptop chargers) so please have your student check with Mrs. Gulliver for those types of items.

Winter Weather Procedure
With the temperatures dropping and the potential of inclement weather, we want to take a second to share the district's winter weather procedure. Click here to read more.

Building Hours
Just a reminder that the building does not open until 8:00 a.m. Students who are dropped off prior to that time will be waiting outside until the door unlocks. With winter approaching and the weather getting cooler, please make sure that your child has the appropriate attire for the elements.
Dress Code
Hello CMS families!
Please be sure your student is following the dress code when coming to campus for classes.
  • Leggings are allowed if the top students are wearing is long enough to reach the knuckles on a fisted hand when a student has her hand at her side.
  • Shorts worn to school should also be long enough to reach the knuckles of a fisted hand when a student has her hand at her side.
  • Students may not wear crop tops that expose the midriff when the student raises her arms.
  • Hats of any kind are not to be worn in school unless there is a designated dress up day such as “western day.”

Animal Science News
We are looking for any donations of vegetables (lettuce, collard greens, peppers, carrots, cucumbers) that might be expiring soon and you know that you won't be using them. We used to get some supplies from the cafeteria, but they do not have as much anymore so our supply runs low quickly.

Also, we are running low on newspaper and we use it to line the cages. If you read the paper, please consider sending to school with your child for animal science.

If you are able to bring up any of the above-mentioned items that you know you won't be using, instead of throwing it away, it would be much appreciated if you could donate it for our animals in class.

You can reach me at lori.cashon@southlakecarroll.edu for more information or drop off arrangements.

APPRECIATE YOU!!

Covid -19
We have a Well clinic and a Sick clinic, which is called the waiting room. The waiting room is where kids who have any of the symptoms listed below will wait for their parent or emergency contact to pick them up. These two rooms are completely separate to limit cross contamination.  Per the TEA and Tarrant County Public Health Guidelines, your child must be sent home for additional monitoring and observation. It is strongly recommended that you 1. Isolate your child at home, 2. Avoid unnecessary contact with others and 3. Contact your child’s physician for further guidance.

Covid-19 like Symptoms include:
Fever
Sore Throat
New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing or in a diagnosed asthmatic or chronic allergic student, a change in baseline
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Abdominal pain
Abnormal taste or smell
New onset of severe headache

Additional relevant symptoms include:
Fatigue
Chills
Congestion or runny nose
Significant muscle pain or ache
Nausea

Please have a plan in place every morning for how you will pick up your child should you get a call. If neighbors or friends are your emergency contact, please make sure they will be available if you are not. We are expecting your student to be picked up ASAP and within 30 mins.

We are asking parents to be extra vigilant this year and not send your child to school with any of the above symptoms. Remember to screen (including temperature) every morning and fill out your Sunday evening screening survey.

We are discouraging the use of as needed meds as it could mask symptoms. It will depend on the circumstances surrounding the clinic visit. Please call to discuss this further if you have concerns.
If your child has seasonal allergies, please start medicating with a daily allergy medication now and consider a daily nasal spray. Developing a good routine now will help cut down on their symptoms later and will avoid me from having to send your child home unnecessarily.

Per CDC, AAP and TEA, nebulizer treatments for Asthmatics are not recommended. We are only accepting inhalers this year.

Please try to anticipate your child’s needs and send water bottles, lip balm, snacks and hygiene products. We are trying to keep the amount of students who visit the clinic to sick and urgent matters.

It is important to have a clean mask every day. Consider having multiple masks to be worn during the week to be laundered over the weekend. Paper masks can air dry in a brown paper bag over 2-3 days.
Please make sure your primary number is the one you want us to call first, should your child need to come home. Consider saving CMS number 817-949-5400 in your phone as a recognizable contact.
Parents if you still need to drop off emergency meds to the clinic like Epi pens and inhalers, there is a medication bin in the mantrap.

Thank you for your understanding and for your cooperation during these unprecedented times.
