CHRISTMAS MYTHS – LESSON 1

NATIVITY SCENES

I love seeing nativity scenes in people’s yards during the Christmas season. It shows me that they understand and publicly acknowledge the true reason why we celebrate Christmas.

There are several myths attached to most of these nativity scenes. Although they do not detract from the purpose, they still can be considered false.

One is the presence of animals around the manger. First of all, only sheep were allowed in the “tower of the flock” (Micah 4:8) known as the Migdal Eder where Jesus was born. There were no donkeys, cows, or camels. All the sheep were out in the field that night with their “priestly” shepherds. When the shepherds came to the manger only then were the sheep most likely with them because they were keeping watch over them.

Occasionally there may be one or more angels depicted (although not often). Although angels were certainly in attendance, they came specifically to the shepherds while they were still out in the field. There is no indication that anyone else saw the angels.

We will discuss the wise men later.

Despite these matters, it is still a delight to see manger scenes displayed. Do not let these discrepancies detract from the glory of the occasion.

IS HEALING FOR TODAY PART 2

HINDRANCES

Yesterday we learned from Isaiah that Jesus not only died for our sins, but also for our physical healing. The provision has been made but often there are hindrances.

One of the biggest hindrances to receiving healing is lack of faith. Often when a person has been prayed for, they respond with “I hope it did some good.” There is no faith whatsoever in that statement, and you can be sure that if they do receive a healing it is because God is very merciful.

The scriptures tell us in Hebrews chapter 4 that many of the Israelites could not enter into the promised land because of their unbelief. God is not going to force anything on you when it comes to those things that he freely gives. He is a gentleman when it comes to giving. It goes on to say in Hebrews 6:12 that we inherit the promises of God through faith AND patience. We often get impatient waiting on God and miss what He wants us to have. Patience usually comes through testing and trials, and most of us dislike those.

Then there is the issue of unforgiveness. In Mark 11:22 it tells us to “…Have faith in God.” Then it tells us to speak to the mountains that are hindering us. It does not say ask God to speak to them, we are to speak to them. When we do this, we cannot doubt that it is God’s perfect will to bring healing to us or anything else that we need from God. Everything from God is received by faith which is believing without seeing.

Verses 25-26 of Mark 11 tell us another condition that hinders our prayers. It says, “And when ye stand praying, forgive if you have ought (offenses) against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.  But, if ye do not forgive, neither will your father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

So, these three things (and there are more) hinder us from receiving our healing from God. First, unbelief, second lack of patience, and thirdly which could be the most important is unforgiveness. You can’t have anything against anyone and expect God to bless you in your body, your ministry, your business, your family and everything else. If you get these three things dealt with in your life, you can expect to receive healing from God.
