Dear Friends,
What an absolute pleasure it was to see so many of you at this year's Heroes of Hospice event. Over the years, this event has grown in meaningful ways to really embody both Santa Barbara's amazing community spirit by highlighting our outstanding Heroes as well as the importance of coming together as a Hospice of Santa Barbara family. I don't think I've ever felt that quite so deeply as this year.
We are also truly grateful for the compelling and personal stories of this year's speakers who shared profound messages about their own life-changing grief and loss, leading to transformation, action, and growth. Thank you William Peters, Mari Hernandez, and Rolf Geyling for opening your hearts to all of us so that we too may better understand What Matters Most.
And, of course, we were honored to present this year's outstanding Heroes who make our community a better place: Santa Barbara High School, Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics and our own Bereavement Services Team. So well deserved.
I'm humbled and excited by all the incredible support for our free HSB programs. This is all because of you. On behalf of all of our clients and patients, thank you.
On a different note, I did want to share with you a bit about our next speaker in our illuminate Speaker Series. Richard Louv will talk about the importance of nature and our relationship to it. "Nature" became a healer for so many of us during COVID and gave us, I believe, an enhanced appreciation for the natural world. Conversely, technology has pulled so many of our young indoors. As Richard Louv said himself,
"The future will belong to the "nature-smart"--Those individuals, families, businesses, and political leaders who develop a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the natural world and who balance the virtual with the real. The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need."
The timing could not be better.
Be well,
David Selberg

Richard Louv presents
“VITAMIN N” AND THE NEW NATURE MOVEMENT on
Wednesday, October 19
6:00-7:00 PM PDT
|
|
Richard Louv will present “VITAMIN N” AND THE NEW NATURE MOVEMENT virtually on Wednesday, October 19th from 6:00-7:00 PM PDT.
Richard Louv’s books, including Last Child in the Woods, The Nature Principle, Our Wild Calling, and Vitamin N, have helped create an international movement to connect children to the natural world; this new nature movement has grown to include adults. Outside magazine reports that Louv’s work is "widely credited with helping spark an international movement to examine the therapeutic benefits of time spent outside. That movement is nearly ubiquitous today.
New scientific papers revealing the power of wild places to counteract anxiety, stress, depression, ADHD, and even PTSD seem to make headlines every week." Louv’s ongoing efforts have encouraged new, biophilic designs for schools, homes, workplaces, and facilities for aging. Over 1000 studies now show how our connection to nature enhances our physical, mental, and spiritual health, from childhood until the end of life.

When Death Comes
by Mary Oliver
|
|
When death comes
like the hungry bear in autumn;
when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse
to buy me, and snaps the purse shut;
when death comes
like the measle-pox
when death comes
like an iceberg between the shoulder blades,
|
|
I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering:
what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness?
And therefore I look upon everything
as a brotherhood and a sisterhood,
and I look upon time as no more than an idea,
and I consider eternity as another possibility,
