I t is our sincere hope that you are all staying safe and well during these terribly challenging times. We are pleased to share with you the fall 2020 edition of our newsletter, in which we highlight a small sampling of the diverse activities taking place across the institute on behalf of our clients in Massachusetts, across the country and throughout the world. Throughout these long months of the pandemic, our 10 diverse business groups have continued to seamlessly deliver their services, adapting modes and methods as necessary, helping our clients do the same, and, where appropriate, directly addressing critical issues and needs in efforts to combat COVID-19 and its devastating impacts on individuals, organizations and communities. Grant renewals highlight established
early childhood expertise

The UMass Donahue Institute was recently awarded two 5-year grants by the Office of Head Start to continue its established work on early childhood development, both nationally and in New England.
Nationally, the institute was awarded a 5-year, $32.5 million cooperative agreement to direct the Head Start National Center on Program Management and Fiscal Operations (NCPMFO), a role it has filled for the past five years under an earlier award. Under the new cooperative agreement, the institute will continue to work in collaboration with its partners: Family Health International 360, Zero to Three, and the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Donahue's "Data Dash" displays inequities during COVID-19 era
Crises like the COVID-19 outbreak shine a light on existing inequalities.
While virtually every community in the Commonwealth has been impacted by COVID-19, we see notable concentrations in urban areas, particularly Gateway Cities, around the state.

Influence 100 to be evaluated by the institute
The Applied Research & Program Evaluation (ARPE) will serve as the external evaluator for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Influence 100 Program. Influence 100 seeks to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of school superintendents in Massachusetts, create more culturally responsive districts and leaders across the state, and promote better outcomes for students.
Over the next two years, ARPE researchers will gather ongoing formative feedback about program implementation, assess short- and medium-term outcomes resulting from program activities, and establish protocols to support evaluation of longer-term impacts.

Despite international travel bans, the Civic Initiative continues its worldwide reach
Pandemic-related restrictions have paused the international exchange programs run by the UMass Civic Initiative. However, alumni outreach and international speaking engagements have presented opportunities to continue Civic's work. Learn more.
