National Pet Day Photo Contest Winners |

Last Sunday was National Pet Day, so to celebrate, we asked our Facebook followers to submit photos of their pets, regardless of whether they had been adopted from Berkshire Humane Society.
We had an overwhelming response, with 575 entries submitted by the midnight Sunday deadline.

We saw at least 16 species from hermit crabs to horses, chickens to chinchillas. What was clear is that our pets are beloved family members, with descriptions of them such as "contented", "sweet", "perfect", "my little buddy" and "my angel".
Berkshire Humane Society's Marketing Committee selected their top three choices to narrow down the field and then the whole staff voted to determine the winners.

We originally planned to award a customized gift basket to the top photo, but we couldn't decide on just one, so we chose the top three in each category to win a prize and then chose honorary second and third in each category.
Thank you to all who entered. Our staff agonized over choosing their favorites; there were so many good photos the task was overwhelming! In the end, it came down to just what makes our pets dear to us -- personal preference. Here are some of our favorites. With adoptions, we place homeless pets in loving homes and through our programs such as the Pet Food Bank, SafePet program and Family Dog School, we help keep pets in those homes, where they belong. |

Last Wednesday and Thursday, Berkshire Humane Society staff participated in the New England Federation of Humane Societies annual conference, which was offered virtually. The New England Federation of Humane Societies provides information and education to animal welfare workers in New England and beyond.
Due to travel costs, only a few of us are usually able to attend the conference, which is the largest animal welfare conference in the region, but more this year participated because of the virtual format.
A few sessions of the many offered included:
- Socially Conscious Sheltering
- Implementing Enrichment and Playgroups at your Shelter
- Terrified Tigers and other Ferocious Felines: Cat Behavior Modification
- Empathy: The Prescription for Better Client Relationships
- Engaging, Empowering and Managing Your Community through Social Media
We're grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow so we can give the best care to our shelter animals and best service to our customers.

Sparkles is a friendly 11.5-year-old female who was returned to Berkshire Humane Society several years after being adopted because her owner couldn't take care of her anymore. |

Stuart is one of many guinea pigs we have available at the shelter. A group of 16 of them surrendered by one person turned into 29 when several of the females gave birth. |
