DELAWARE GREENWAYS' ADVOCACY KICK-STARTS PLANNING STUDY FOR A TRAIL ALONG GOVERNOR PRINTZ BOULEVARD
|
|
Exciting news!!! A planning study has begun for the Governor Printz Blvd corridor. The study, administered by the Wilmington Area Planning Council (WILMAPCO) will explore multi-modal mobility, safety and travel choices for this 4-lane roadway.
Delaware Greenways has long advocated for safe non-motorized travel on and around Governor Printz Blvd
, connecting the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail (NDGT) at the Cauffiel House in Bellevue State Park, to the trail in Foxpoint SP.
Adding to the NDGT trail and extending up to the Claymont Regiional Transportation Center
will open a pathway that bicyclists and pedestrians can travel for recreation and commuting. This corridor will also complete another vital link in the
East Coast Greenway
. Next up for the study this summer, selection of a consultant. Working with WILMAPCO, DelDOT, DE Transit Corp., NCC Dept. of Land Use on this project, we'll keep you up to date on the newest developments. Stay tuned!

SCENIC VIEWSHED PROTECTION OVERLAY DISTRICT
|
|
At Ashland Nature Center in Hockessin last week, the New Castle County Department of Land Use held their 2nd Public workshop to discuss the proposed protection strategies for Delaware's scenic byways, watersheds and villages.
The concept of a Scenic Viewshed Overlay Protection District to protect those areas along Delaware's Byways
, concentrating first on Brandywine Valley, Red Clay and Harriet Tubman Byways, was well received. In addition to the byway corridors, the overlay is also designed to protect the scenic roads of the Beaver Valley.
The SVOPD is a special zoning district placed over an existing base zone(s), which identifies special provisions in addition to those in the underlying base zone. Basically it's an added level of protection for these areas with intrinsic qualities, outside of normal zoning guideline considerations.
After the presentation, the public participated in an activity to prioritize the most important characteristics of the Brandywine, Beaver and Red Clay Valleys.
|
|
What's next? The County intends to meet with the SVOPD Working Group, of which Delaware Greenways is a member, later this summer. The Overlay Ordinance will then be submitted to County Council in the Fall for adoption.

recognized in Google Maps! Now you can enter your destination in the search box and the Google Maps
walking and cycling directions will route you to your journey's end using the trails. Consider adding a review to help others plan their outing on these trails.

Recently, the Delaware Greenways team led a ride on and around the JAM Trail introducing
Chris
Linn
, who leads the program building the
Circuit Trails in Philly
,
as Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission's Manager of Environmental Planning
, to the trail. Joining us as well was
Daniel Paschall, East Coast Greenway Alliance's Mid-Atlantic
Coordinator
. The JAM Trail is a part of the ECG.
Central to our trail development strategies, working collaboratively with others, we had a great discussion on how to coordinate trail planning across state lines and along the ECG.
