April is Stress Awareness Month, and as we begin the second year of pandemic it's important to recognize our youth are dealing with a lot of stress.
On April 11 at 1 pm, log on to HAUMC's Facebook Live for a conversation about defining, identifying, and helping teens cope with stress.
Heather Alden and Rick Belbutoski will be in conversation to discuss the topic of teen stress and how parents and guardians are so important to helping teens work through it.

THE MAHLE PANEL in Progressive Christian Thought

Topic: "Who Are We?: Christian Nationalism, White Supremacy and Pathways of Liberation"
The insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6th, 2021, opened the eyes of many people in our nation--and including the world--to the religious views, politics and aims of Christian Nationalism and its intersections with bigotry, violence and white supremacy. To unpack and understand what happened against the larger movements of history, religious traditions and injustice, the several distinguished guests have been invited to share in a panel of conversation as Hamline University's 2021 Mahle Panel in Progressive Christian Thought.

Young Adults at Hennepin are inviting other young people with a heart for social justice to explore issues of faith and racial justice through the planning, producing, and launching of a new Hennepin podcast.
The podcast will serve as a digital contribution to HAUMC’S growing digital presence and will be an important part of conversation being had about equity in Minneapolis and the country.
Those with interest in the project should attend one of two information sessions being held on Zoom at 11 am on Saturday, April 17, and 7 pm on Thursday, April 22, to learn more about this exciting project.

In the Gospel of Luke, we learn that as the risen Jesus appeared to his disciples, “in their joy they were disbelieving.” We can imagine them saying "We just can't believe it. We just can't believe it!"
But finally they did believe, and when they did Jesus entrusted them with the task of witnessing this miracle to others. Maybe you,too, find yourself saying, I just can't believe it!–or find yourself wondering what the “it” is that you believe about Easter.
Together we will explore how we understand the mystery of the resurrection, and how we are called to bear witness to the ways that God brings new life and hope into the world.

Healing our City:
Come in to the Daily Virtual Prayer Tent on Zoom
Beginning March 8 and continuing for 4-6 weeks, the city of Minneapolis and the names of George Floyd and Derek Chauvin will again feel like the center of the world’s gaze. In contrast, we will be focusing on a different center and we invite you to join us in our Healing Our City Virtual Prayer Tent.
We are not ignoring the trial but taking advantage of this moment to address the injustice. We want to use the energy of this moment to go deep. We want to use this moment of openness and to take all this attention and energy to face what is truly offensive to God. In this way we pray we might do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly before God.
This virtual prayer tent will continue daily throughout the course of the trial. You may access this prayer experience via Zoom or as a livestream on our Healing Our City Facebook page. It will also be available as a recording on our Facebook page.

April is Environmental Justice Month!

Environmental justice is an important part of the struggle to improve and maintain a clean and healthful environment. People who live, work and play in America's most polluted environments are commonly people of color, Indigenous Peoples, and low-income communities.
Environmental Justice requires that we, as individuals, make personal and consumer choices to consume as little of Mother Earth’s resources and to produce as little waste as possible; and make the conscious decision to challenge and reprioritize our lifestyles to ensure the health of the natural world for present and future generations.
We invite you, your family, and your friends to take action towards Environmental Justice by downloading a Climate BINGO card and complete the actions for a BINGO! Take photos of you and/or your family completing the activity between April 1-22, post to the HAUMC Facebook page, Twitter, and/or to Instagram. Make sure to tag #HennepinHOPE
All households that post will receive a free box of Energy Star LED light bulbs! Completed BINGO cards will win a HAUMC reusable grocery bag and a pack of light bulbs!

Old School by Steeple People needs YOUR STUFF!!! We have shelves that are a little too empty.
Our new and improved donation days (beginning April 14) are WEDNESDAY 12-4 and SATURDAY 12-4. If those days don't work for you, please call to set up an appointment: 612 871-8305.
As you likely recall, we particularly need: kitchen items, decor, jewelry (in any condition), art, men's clothing, women's dresses, small furniture items (like end tables) in beautiful condition.

Looking for a way to support local farmers and BIPOC neighbors? Check out Food for the People CSA!
The mission of this program is to provide locally grown food to Black, Indigenous, and communities of color while supporting a cooperative of local, diverse farmers to earn a living wage.
This program was created because as farmers we believe everyone should have access to locally and responsibly grown farm food, not just those with financial wealth, and that operating a small farm and feeding your local foodshed should be a dignified job, not one of poverty and scarcity. In 2020, the Food for the People CSA program. donated CSA shares to 62 low-income BIPOC families in the Twin Cities. This year they are working to increase that number to 100 families.

It's been almost a year since the word “quarantine” entered our everyday vocabulary. And now more than ever, we appreciate the POWER of HEALTH CARE, COMMUNITY, and HOPE. It makes sense then -- to celebrate spring -- and start your WALK FOR HOPE!
Common Hope is celebrating its 35th anniversary and to mark the occasion, this year's Walk For Hope is set to BE BIGGER and BETTER! We're counting on you to walk again. Help us show the world that THE POWER OF HOPE has never been stronger.
Last year, you were part of raising more than $115,000 to support distance learning for students without connectivity, provide access to homework helplines, and get chronic disease medicine to those who needed it most!

Local Youth Mission Trip
August 2-6, 2021
You're invited to save the first week in August for the upcoming Local Justice Mission Trip.
As an intentional response to the inequities that have been illuminated and amplified by the pandemic and killing of George Floyd in the hands of the Minneapolis Police, Hennepin youth will have the opportunity to join youth from all over the Twin Cities for a week of service.
The local justice mission is a collaborative effort from five area United Methodist Church's and is open to middle and high school students.

Being Anti-Racist: Read, Learn, Act, Impact:
A learning and action group for families
Weekly on Sundays at 7:30pm on Zoom
Join a group of parents, grandparents, and other adults on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. We discuss great books, learn through conversation, and support each other as we take action steps to be anti-racist within our daily lives. All while trying to have an impact on the kids we love.

Family, Youth and Children's Ministry
Listening Sessions with Lynne & Rick coming in May
A lot has happened in the lives of our children, youth and families over the past year. We believe that ministry should reflect our collective lived experiences.
Please join Rick and Lynne as they host listening sessions with parents and youth. We invite you to share ideas about what we should keep from our previous ministry offerings, and what changes could be made to better reflect the lessons learned from the past year.
Sessions will be held in person in the Ministry House backyard and also on Zoom. Playground supervision for younger kids will be available, and we’ll have fun activities for older kids, too.

If so, you are cordially invited to the 13th annual Align Minneapolis furniture drive – “Sofas & ...” on Saturday, May 15th, 2021 from 9-noon at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church (511 Groveland Ave, Minneapolis).
Furniture will then be given to guests of Align Minneapolis outreach ministries to assist in furnishing new apartments.

2021 Tax Incentives for Giving to Hennepin Avenue UMC
Two charitable giving incentives of the CARES Act are extended for 2021. Here’s what it may mean for planning your giving to Hennepin:
1. Expansion of the universal charitable deduction for cash gifts. For taxpayers taking the standard deduction, the “above-the-line” deduction is $300 for single filers, and (increased to) $600 for married couples filing jointly.
2. Extension of the cap on deductions for cash gifts. For those who itemize, the cap on annual gifts continues for 2021 at up to 100% of the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income (AGI).
Again, these tax incentives are available only for cash gifts to qualified charities.

Opening Doors Gala
Emma Norton Services Annual Event and Silent Auction

Emma Norton Services is a national mission site of the UMC. ENS supports women recovering from homelessness, trauma, mental, chemical and chronic health issues. and single parent families with 3 or more children in safe, affordable housing.
The Opening Doors Gala is ENS annual fundraising event. This is the 2nd Annual Virtual Opening Doors Gala It is an evening of philanthropy, community and celebration bringing together supporters from all over the country!
The goal is 400 viewers raising $100,000 to support their mission of providing transformational housing and growth for women and families on their journey of recovery.
Hennepin UMW is supporting the event by providing themed gift baskets for the Silent Auction. Monetary donations to support the event are welcome at VVirasy@emmanorton.org.
