What's Happening
at St. Wilfrid's Episcopal Church and School
February 25th, 2021 - March 4th, 2021
St. Wilfrid's is a Christian community seeking to know and unconditionally share God's unfailing love.
Dear St. Wilfrid's family,

It began with walking the narrow road to the interior.

What transpired since I first stepped through the doors of St. Wilfrid’s back in May 2018 has been infinitely more than I could ask or imagine. Through the Episcopal Church, I’ve met kindred spirits: prophets, seers, and sages whose wisdom streams buoy me towards a better becoming.

I’m completing my time as your Director of Communications at the end of February. What’s next for me? Having grown authentically into the truth of who I am, it’s time to emerge from the shambles and brambles of my own interior wilderness and be the actor I was preordained to be.

I’m truly surprised where God has taken me. There was truly no knowing. This season of Lent and ever after, may you rest in the not knowing and commit to finding out.

I hope to see you again at the wilderness’ edge.

A Word About In-Person Worship
In light of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling last week regarding the closing of churches during the pandemic, many people are asking when we will once again resume in-person worship at St. Wilfrid's. As we keep an eye on the COVID numbers in Orange County, our decision to return to in-person worship will be dictated by the guidance and directives of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. The current (2/09/2021) 7-day average of infections is still 20% higher than the peak days during our 2020 summer surge when we all felt like the virus was out of control. The good news, though, is that those numbers have been consistently declining for the past month. In other words, what we have been doing most recently is finally beginning to produce dividends. But now is not the time to grow complacent. So we will remain apart a little longer. Our primary concern is for the health and wellbeing of the members of our congregation, and we don’t wish to put anyone in jeopardy by our actions. Meanwhile, the COVID task force of the parish is now beginning to have conversations about what life will look like once we are able to safely reopen our campus for worship. We will keep you apprised of any decisions made regarding our worship life together.

Faithfully,

Bob Honeychurch, Interim Rector

Feedback Requested for Worship Formats
As a part of our Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 24, we had the chance to experiment with a different worship format for our service that day. Instead of providing a pre-recorded service for the week, we instead had a “live” service via Zoom. Each of the worship formats provides its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

The pre-recorded version allows us to pre-tape the various components of service individually inside the church and then stitch them together into a final product. The in-person version allows us to worship in real-time, and to see and interact with one another. The in-person service would be recorded for later viewing for those not able to be present for the church at the specified hour.

And so we now turn to you for your thoughts. If you have a preference for one format or the other, or if you have questions about our worship, we encourage you to reach out to Bob Honeychurch, the interim rector, for your feedback. You can reach him by email at bob@stwilfridschurch.org, or by leaving a message at his church phone at (714) 962-7512, ext. 202. In advance, thank you for your input.
Readers Needed for Sunday Virtual Services
St. Wilfrid's is looking for individuals and families to take part in reading the lessons and prayers for Sunday virtual services!

If you or your family is interested, please contact Steve Swartzell by email at steve@stwilfridschurch.org, or by leaving a message at his church phone at (714) 962-7512, ext. 205. No prior experience is necessary. We would love to get as broad a representation of the St. Wilfrid's community as possible.
Self Help Interfaith Program (SHIP)
Thank You St. Wilfrid’s! We provided one week of support for the SHIP house in Garden Grove. SHIP is a local faith based sober living transitional environment for those seeking employment. Our cooking helped fill their bellies and warm their souls. There were generous donations to help SHIP weather the current COVID storm. Please continue to keep the people at SHIP in your prayers. Their website is www.shipinoc.com.

If you have any questions about SHIP, feel free to contact Jim (jrs@jimbocosw.com) or Steven (steven@jimbocosw.com).

Thank you for supporting the SHIP program.
David Hayward
David Hayward thanks people for their support and prayers. He is feeling better and glad to be back at home after 10 days in the hospital.
Pandemic Office Hours During January
As the COVID virus numbers continue to increase in Orange County, the St. Wilfrid’s Church Office is making accommodations to reflect this reality. For the remainder of the month of January, for their own protection and the protection of the community, the church office staff will be working remotely as much as they are able. Following is a list of office staff, and their hours of availability:

Terry Roberts: In the office Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 12 noon. Working remotely in the afternoon.

Important reminders:

1.  Accept your emotions. Anger, fear, anxiety, etc. are all normal. Be gentle on yourself and offer patience to others. We’re in this together!
2.  Limit exposure to media and remember that official communications from the CDC are the best source of up-to-date information (more info on that below!)
3.  Move! (more info on that below!)
4.  Connect with others (more info on that below!). It helps improve your physical health and psychological well-being.
Families can call 211 from any phone in OC for help with anything from legal aid to mental health emergencies to housing and transportation.

The NAMI warm line is open to residents of OC or LA. Calling or texting can connect someone with support and resources in their respective counties.

Please Note: If you already have a counselor or therapist (even if you haven't seen them in a while), you can call their office and ask about “telehealth” services or virtual counseling/therapy. Many offices now offer these services that do not require you to come into the office.

Be Mindful of Media Exposure
It is important to keep up to date on the frequently changing information regarding COVID-19 and the measures being put in place to keep everyone safe and healthy. As you are likely aware, it’s hard to turn on the TV or open the internet without being exposed to 24 hours of breaking news banners, podcasts, memes, and stories from around the world. The more we watch or listen to this media, the more it can affect our mental health and stress. You may feel better if you limit your exposure to this kind of media, and use reputable sources (i.e. WHO, CDC, OC Health Agency).
Here are some links to the above mentioned health related resources:
