Hillside Youth Police Academy
March 23-27, 2020 from 6PM-8PM

This program has been developed to reach out to young people from ages 14-17. The goal is to build positive  relationships between the youth of the community and police officers.

There is no cost to attend the Academy. All class will be held at the Hillside Police Department. It will be the responsibility of the student to provide transportation each day to the class.
Students will receive a total of 10 service learning  hours at the end of the class.

All applications should be returned to Hillside Police Dept. at 425 Hillside Ave.; Hillside, IL; 60162 or to Det. Bailey, the School's Resource Officer who ca be found in Rm. E114.

My name is Alishia Winkler, Education Chair for the Illinois Federation of Business Women's Clubs (IFBW).

I am excited to announce that we are awarding six $2,000 scholarships to deserving young women in Illinois. High school seniors, first-time college students and returning college students are eligible to apply.  

Scholarship applications are due March 1, 2020, with winners to be notified no later than March 20. If selected, scholarship winners must be willing to participate in our Speak-Off Competition in Champaign, Illinois, on Saturday, May 2, 2020. This contest provides an excellent developmental opportunity for students to network with our members, learn about our organization, and get the experience of speaking before and interviewing with friendly faces.  

IFBW is a state-wide organization that strives to make a difference in the lives of working women through education, professional development, networking, and advocacy. To further expand our commitment to education, our membership approved funding for this state scholarship program in 2018, and we are proud to be able to offer them again for the third year.

Service Learning Opportunities
West Cook County Youth Club (WCCYC)
 
The WCCYC is an after school activity organization that serves Bellwood, IL and the surrounding area. In their continuing effort to improve their services to the community, they are seeking volunteers to help implement the new programs that they have recently created. 

All potential volunteers should have the necessary skills to manage grade school age kids in a fun, learning environment. To volunteer, please click here. Interested people can also send an e-mail to [email protected].

Programs currently being run:
  1. STEM Club: You would be in charge of implementing simple electronic and mechanical kids and activities. Need to have basic knowledge of math, electrical and mechanical concepts. 1h of volunteer work a week.
  2. Ping Pong Club: You will introduce the kids as to how to play ping pong the right way, and then lead to in-house competitions. Need to have prior knowledge of ping pong play, game rules and etiquette. 2h of volunteer work a week.
  3. Pool Club: You will introduce the kids as to how to play pool the right way, and then lead to in-house competitions. Need to have prior knowledge of pool play, game rules and etiquette. 2h of volunteer work a week. 
  4. Homework/Tutoring: You will help students from 2nd to 10th grade with Math, Reading, Spelling & Science homework. You will need to have skills and proficiency in the subject that you are tutoring in. 1-3h of volunteer work a week.
  5. Reading Club: You will guide members in reading (sometimes out loud), thinking about what they read, and developing a joy for reading. You will need knowledge in reading skills, grammar, reading material variety, concept development and also have a joy for reading. 1h of volunteer work a week.
  6. Health & Hygiene Club: You will tutor in basic body, dental and bathroom activities, alongside knowledge of germs and disease control. You need to have expertise in the anatomy, germs and disease control, along with healthy habits. 1h of volunteer work a week.
  7. Environmental Action: You will teach basic earth science material, along with climate, trash, and recycling information. You need to have knowledge of the earth, air and oceans, alongside environmental issues and the direct effects of recycling efforts. 2h of volunteer work a week.

Vision 7-to-7

Is there an after school club that you wish we had that we don't?

Vision 7-to-7 is currently working to open more after school clubs and activities that will allow students to stay at school longer and be more involved. However in order to do so, we need student input. Is there a club or activity you'd like to see that Proviso West does not currently have? The sky is the limit! 

There are two new clubs on the horizon:
  1. Beyond the Limits (FREE Studio Time): Take advantage of having your music professionally recorded with the proper coaching especially if you are an aspiring rapper/singer. This group will meet on Monday and Wednesdays starting Feb. 24, 2020 from 315PM-530PM. 
  2. Panther Lounge:  Come on down to chill, watch movies, play video/board games or study. This group will meet on Tuesdays and Thursday starting Feb. 25 and will go from 315PM-7PM.

Through Proviso Community Bank

Proviso Community Bank, in recognition of the importance of building future civic and business leaders, has established the Scholarship Program. as an active corporate citizen of the communities that we serve, we endeavor to always make a positive difference in the lives of area individuals & families.

Goal of the Program:
The goal of the Scholarship Program is to assist graduating high school seniors in continuing their education beyond high school at a university, college, trade or vocational school. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to 14 graduating seniors from a variety of 14 different high schools in the area.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria:

1. Academic Achievement
2. Extra-curricular activities
3. Involvement in the Community
4. Applicants must have maintained a "B" average, or better, for 7 semesters of high school
5. Applicants must plan to enroll full-time at an accredited 2 or 4-year college, university or trade/vocational school. (Proof of enrollment will be required for release of scholarship payment after the award is announced).
6. Gender and race will  not be criteria for selection
7. Applicant's total family annual income may not exceed $65,600; therefore, a family's adjusted gross income per federal income tax documents will need to be provided.
8. Employees of the Hinsdale Bank & Trust Company and members of their immediate families are not eligible.

RISEBio Scholarship


The Research Immersive Scholastic Experience in Biology (RISEbio) program is a unique support and scholarship program available to incoming first year students who demonstrate academic potential and financial need. RISEbio is for those students who are enthusiastic about biology and science, are interested in gaining a mentored research experience, and want to be part of this distinctive model for science education.

RISEbio is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program that provides qualifying new students with substantial scholarship funds ($2,500 for 3 semesters; $7,500 total) and the opportunity to engage in an authentic real-world research experiences by exchanging introductory biology laboratory sections for a hands-on mentored research experience. No extra course work is required to participate in RISEbio. RISEbio Scholars will also be part of a learning community that supports transitioning in to college and partake in activities that develop technical and professional skills, which ultimately help scholars springboard into additional research opportunities, internships, graduate/professional schools, and careers.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis  through 2/1/21 although the priority application deadline has passed.

What is RISEBio
RISEbio is a National Science Foundation funded scholarship program that bridges social integration, vertical mentoring, and an authentic research experience to enhance student academic success.

RISEbio gives entering freshman interested in pursuing a degree in biology the opportunity to engage in real-world research with faculty and graduate students.  RISEbio scholars also live together in a learning community during their first year and receive $2,500 in scholarship funds for their first three semesters ($7,500 total).
How does RISEbio work?

Prospective students submit an application to become a RISEbio scholar.  If selected, you join the RISEbio learning community and select a research stream.

Although you will take the Introductory Biology sequence during your first year, you will exchange course-based laboratories with an authentic research experience.  During your first semester, you will take a RISEbio specific research methods course followed by 2 semesters of authentic research.  Program Next Steps facilitates additional research and scholarly activities to provide continued academic excellence and training.

What type of research is available?
RISEbio scholars have the option to join 1 of 2 research streams:
(1) Immunity and Cancer - Led by Dr. Allison Land, the Immunity and Cancer group is working to determine the mechanisms by which host immune proteins that mutagenize viral DNA are kept from damaging cellular genomic DNA
(2) Brain and Behavior - Led by Dr. Rachel Cohen, the Brain and Behavior group is working to identify novel genes expressed in the brain that control reproductive and aggressive behaviors.

Who qualifies to be a RISEbio Scholar?
To qualify for the RISEbio scholarship program, you must meet several criteria:
- Demonstrated financial need
- A minimum high-school GPA of 2.66 (3.0 preferred)
- Meet minimum ACT sub-scores

1.Please provide a 150-300 word essay that details how the RISEbio program and a mentored research experience would help you achieve your career goals.
2.Please list and describe any research experience (high school science fair, lab volunteer, student assistant, science summer camps, etc) that you might have.

Kathryn G. Hansen Scholarship
$500 for the 2020-2021 Academic Year

For the 2020-2021 academic year, one scholarship in the amount of $500 will be awarded. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, fees, books, or other related educational expenses. 

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
 
·         Be enrolled full time as a high school senior in the 2019-2020 academic year in Illinois, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;
·         Have a strong commitment to pursue a higher education in an office professional, secretarial, or business- related field within the State of Illinois with preference given to attendance at the University of Illinois;
·         Involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
·         Demonstrate academic achievement;
·         Be a resident of Illinois;
·         Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Why Should I Care About My [P]SAT Score?

What's up with this Exam?
Whenever you are provided the opportunity to take the [P]SAT, you should be present in school. As they say "Perfect Practice makes Perfect!" The more you take it -- and you are provided 3 opportunities each year -- the more familiar you will be with the exam and the more comfortable you will be taking it when the big official day comes in April of your Junior year when it really counts. No one likes to test, but unfortunately the [P]SAT is a gatekeeper for those who can get: the best scholarship, into the best colleges and even whether you can  continue to play sports in college.

We all wanna make the big bucks when we get out into the real world and college and the amount of education that you have is a leading indicator as to how much you will make one day:

 

So how do you ensure that you get into that really great college that will allow you to be as successful as possible and can make as much money as possible? It's a result of many factors, but two of the largest factors that colleges and universities take into consideration is a combination of your overall GPA and your SAT score:

Finally, are you an eager an anxious athlete who'd like to be able to continue to play sports in college. No matter how good of an athlete you are, colleges are still going to look at a combination of your SAT score and your grades to determine whether you can play at their college or not?



At the end of the day, the [P]SAT can help determine a lot of your future. It's never too late to take it seriously and it's never too late to practice. Take these next couple weeks to focus on you and what you want for your future. Be here on April 21 and 22 and be ready to go. . . . . your future depends on it!

Scholastic Bowl
Congratulations!

Congrats to  Thomas Forgue winning an award for making the All-Conference team in Scholastic Bowl. 

So you may be asking yourself:
What is Scholastic Bowl? Here's a quick synopsis of what it is:

ScoBowl (or Scholastic Bowl) is an activity where two teams of students from different schools (generally) come together to duel each other in a no-holds-barred, brutal brawl of useless knowledge muscle. Scholastic Bowl games consist of a series of questions (usually around thirty), as well as a set of follow-ups for each question (also called a toss-up).

Here's the gist of it. The two teams of five players each seat themselves at rows of desks facing each other with a buzzer for each player. The captains of the teams introduce themselves and the team players. The moderator then reads the first "toss-up" question. Any player may buzz in and respond to the question. If they are incorrect, any player on the other team may buzz in and answer the question. If neither team is correct, the answer is given and the next toss-up is given. If either team is correct, they receive ten points and are read a four-part (usually) follow-up question. They have thirty seconds to talk amongst themselves about the answers to each part, and the captain writes them down so he/she can remember them. The other team may also confer during this time. Also, the team who answered the toss-up correctly may call time if they finish before thirty seconds have elapsed and force the other team to stop conferring as well. At the end of thirty seconds or whenever time is called, the captain of the team which answered the toss-up correctly will read their answers for the follow-up question. For each part they have correct, they receive five points (twenty maximum points). After fifteen toss-ups, a halftime is given, and then the final fifteen are read. At the end of thirty questions, the team with more points wins the match.

Questions can fall in many different categories - including History, Literature, Music, Mathematics, Earth Science, Biology, Driver's Ed, Home Economics, etc, etc, etc.

Choir Performs at Windy City Bulls Game
Feb. 20, 2020



On Feb. 20, 2020 the Proviso West Choir performed at the Sears Centre Arena for Windy City Bulls Education Day!   Congratulations  to the Choir on a great & successful job at a performance of the National Anthem! And "kudos" to the NJ ROTC for a wonderful flag presentation during the National Anthem.


Mardi Gras Celebrations
Panthers Celebrating Fat Tuesday

Mardi Gas or Fat Tuesday, refers to events of the  Carnival  celebration, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the  Epiphany  (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before  Ash Wednesday , which is known as  Shrove Tuesday . Mardi Gras is  French  for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual  Lenten sacrifices  and  fasting  of the  Lenten  season. Mardi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans, Louisiana each year. Participants where costumes, watch parades with some of the most amazing parade krewes (i.e. the mighty, mighty Zulus seen below), collect beads and eat things like king cake.

    • Mental Health
    • Justice Involved (criminal justice)
    • Green space & land usage
    • Access to healthcare and resources

NJROTC Does It Again!

This weekend Proviso West NJROTC Drill Team took home their last trophies of the season. The drill team took home: 
  • 4th place in Color Guard, 
  • 2nd place in armed exhibition, 
  • 2nd place in unarmed regulation, and last but not least,
  • The drill team took home 1st place in Inspection. 
Along with the trophies, cadets Kaila Ramiro and Natalia Aceves were the last top 5 individual standing cadets in the knock out competition out of hundreds of cadets competing. Outstanding job to close out the season and good luck to next year's team. It will only get better from here!

What is Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)?
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan China.

Can People in the US get COVID-19?
COVID-19 is spreading from person to person in person in Chicago, and limited spread among close contacts has been detected in some countries outside China, including the USA. AT this time, however, this virus is NOT currently spreading in communities in the USA. Right now, the greatest risk of infection is for people in China or people who have traveled to China. Risk of infection is dependent upon exposure. Close contacts of people who are infected are at greater risk of exposure, for example health care workers and close contact of people who are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. CDC continues to closely monitor the situation.

How can I help protect myself?
The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19.

There are simple everyday preventative actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. These include:
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
If you are sick, to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others, you should:
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Is there a vaccine?
There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. The best way to prevent infection it to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19.

Is there a treatment?
There is no specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. People with COVID-19 can seek medical care to help relieve symptoms.
