Community News & Updates

City of Kindness Spotlight

As an official City of Kindness, the City is committed to fostering a culture of kindness, inclusion, tolerance, and engagement among our residents, visitors, schools, businesses, and city organizations. Starting this week, the City will feature a monthly City of Kindness Spotlight to recognize acts of kindness within our community. This spotlight will feature stories of kindness and community engagement from local residents, organizations, public servants, first responders, teachers, students and more!

SeaWeeders Garden Club

Our inaugural City of Kindness Spotlight features the SeaWeeders – an organization whose public garden projects are prominent around town. The SeaWeeders is a club for gardening enthusiasts whose goal is to promote sustainable beautification around our city. They have done so much to sustain kindness in our city, from participating in local city events, to spreading awareness of and installing plants to support monarch butterflies, to organizing teams of gardeners to add to the beauty of our community. The organization has been around for more than 20 years and is credited with many of the loveliest spots in Solana Beach, including helping with the gardens at the Solana Beach Eastern Gateway, Fire Station, Post Office, Coastal Rail Trail, San Elijo Lagoon, and the El Viento Pocket Park.

My Community App

The City has many different digital platforms intended to help residents stay connected and engaged. The Solana Beach My Community App is a cloud-based mobile platform that allows residents and visitors to report location-specific concerns such as potholes, graffiti, or other matters of concern directly from their smartphone or tablet. Issues such as these that are reported through the My Community App will be assigned to appropriate City Staff based on the specific complaint type, and residents and visitors will be able to follow up on the progress of the corrective action.

In addition to submitting citizen complaints and reporting issues for remediation, the My Community App allows residents and visitors to access the City’s E-blast news feed, event calendar, parks and public facilities information, and other useful contact information to supplement the City’s website.

The My Community App is available in the iTunes Store (iPhone) and Google Play Store (Android) for download by searching “City of Solana Beach.”

Safe Routes to School Community Feedback

As reported in prior Updates, the City has been working on a Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS) to assess transportation needs and challenges for students and parents as they commute to and from schools throughout the City. Some of the goals of the Program are to identify specific enhancements to the City’s existing roadway network to create a safer and more comfortable school commute with emphasis on walking and bicycling options for Solana Beach schoolchildren, their families and other residents.

The City is currently seeking community feedback on the proposed SRTS improvement recommendations. Listed below are the current eight project sites available for public review and comment. Please note that the assessment of the Child Development Center (CDC) for the Solana Beach School District on North Rios Avenue and Cliff Street is currently underway. Once available, recommendations for that site will be posted here.

  1. Recommendations for Earl Warren Middle School
  2. Recommendations for Skyline School
  3. Recommendations for Boys & Girls Club
  4. Recommendations for Santa Fe Christian Schools
  5. Recommendations for Solana Vista Elementary School

Community Advisories

North Rios Avenue Road Repair Work

Thursday, September 1st, from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

A portion of North Rios Avenue will have road repair work performed on Thursday, September 1st, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. This work will consist of filling in cracks in the pavement and placement of a slurry seal on top of the roadway. The area of the work on North Rios Avenue will be from Seabright Lane to the north end of the cul-de-sac near the San Elijo Lagoon.

Due to the nature of the work, parking will be prohibited and vehicles will not be allowed in the construction zone during the construction window. The slurry seal will need most of the day to cure before vehicles are allowed to use the road again. Driving over the slurry seal before the cure time has been completed could lead to vehicle and property damage and damage to the roadway work.

Residents within the work area limits can walk on the sidewalk or roadway shoulder to and from their vehicles parked outside of the work area, but vehicle access to driveways or properties is not permitted during work hours. The San Elijo Lagoon trail network can also be accessed via Manchester Avenue in Encinitas and Solana Hills Drive. Please stay alert and proceed with caution near the work area.

Please note that the construction schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather and availability of material. If you have any questions, please contact the City of Solana Beach Engineering Department at pw-eng@cosb.org.

La Colonia Park Pickleball Court Expansion

Temporary Closure from August 24th - August 31st

The pickleball court at La Colonia Park will be temporarily closed so that the playing surface can be expanded. The net was removed today, August 24th, and will be reinstalled on Wednesday, August 31st. During this time, the concrete surface will be expanded to the south by approximately 10 feet. The net will be re-installed on August 31st once the concrete has had sufficient time to cure. A second closure of the pickleball court will be required at a future date to move the net and restripe the court so that the court is centered on the lengthened concrete area.

Please note that the construction schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather and availability of material. If you have any questions, please contact the City of Solana Beach Engineering Department at pw-eng@cosb.org.
