______________

The scripture this week is a teaching of Jesus in a short series on discipleship. They include instructions on holding each other accountable, forgiving the repentant, living out of our faith and humbly serving our God. It is common in the western culture to express our thanks for work done. It is so built into our social patterns, that I gave a tip even to a cashier who did no more than get a canned drink out of the cooler for me. Expressing our gratitude is a good practice, and we will cover it in a teaching of Jesus next week, yet this teaching admonishes us not to be in service to God in order to get rewards.

I am reminded of a comment our son once made at report card time. He said friends of his receive money for getting As, but he doesn’t even get a “Nice job!” because As are expected in our house. When I feel sorry for our children, I look at their accomplishments and friends and think something must have been right. They knew they were loved. We did our annual summer planning as a family, often giving our ideas about each other’s gifts and goals, and then expected each one to be their best.

This teaching suggests something similar. God gives each of us unique gifts and calls us to discipleship. By grace, and not by our earning, God’s love is given, and we are honored. Our service is expected. This is what the brother of the prodigal son was told by his father when he complained his brother was being given undeserved honor. He was told that he had the love of his father and the comfort of his home, all the while.

You and I know the love of God and the Christian community. Our duty is to be in humble service to the One who gives it and our savior, Jesus Christ. Our reward is already great, even if it doesn’t include a place at the head of the table.

This week is the celebration of World Communion, our annual recognition that we are one family of God, an inclusive, universal church feasting at the same table of Jesus Christ. We are all answering our calling in our own communities and nations. Join your siblings of faith across the world and come to the table. If you can’t make it to the sanctuary, prepare your own sacred place at your table with a bit of bread and cup of juice so our celebration can extend to your home.

Give me a call if you’d like to talk. My cell is 262-617-9330 or reach me at the church.

God bless you.

Pastor Don Francis

What is Plein Air Painting? – A Definition

Plein air painting is the act of painting outdoors from nature. This is in contrast to painting inside in the studio. It is the best way for an artist to learn to see the true colors of nature and also to capture the mood and feeling of a place. Artists throughout history have gone outdoors to paint to better understand the landscape. Corot and Monet were two well known artists who worked this way.
