🍀 4-H Council: President's Message
|
|
Hi everyone! I can't believe it's December already. I'll bet we are all in the same boat!
We have had a great first half of the 4-H year filled with in-person activities and events that mean so much to each of us and our community; how is your club giving to our community this year? Food drives? Coat drives? Toy drives? (yes, all the staples, right?) What new and exciting ways is your club providing community service? And what new and innovative projects and meeting ideas are out there? I'd love to hear about them.
Our CCC meetings, as you all know, are historically held at the 4-H Office in the conference room the first half of the year and then transition to the YAL Center (did you get a poinsettia?) in January. This year we moved them to the YAL Center from the start to afford a larger space that could better accommodate social distancing and incorporated Zoom for those who weren't present. Please be on the lookout for the survey from the office about meeting participation and location, because we really want to take into consideration everyone's concerns and wishes as much as possible. If you don't share your thoughts, we don't know what they are and we can't possibly do anything to accommodate them. So please complete the survey. I know you all have opinions!! Safety is always our number one priority, and at the same time I really appreciate the in-person options that we have. Thanks in advance (I hope) for responding to the survey so we can determine where the CCC meetings will be held for the remainder of the 4-H Year.
I also want to take a minute and thank those of you who have already completed your registration requirements. It was a bumpy road for everyone involved, but I think we are getting there! If you have not completed all of your requirements, please take a few minutes and get it done right away. It may seem insignificant, but it is really quite important. We want all of our clubs and leaders to be in good standing! I appreciate each volunteer and parent who gives his or her time to this program and to set examples for our youth about what leadership looks like, what responsibility looks like, and how we help shape the future. 4-H is FUN, rewarding, and has a long deep history; it also has the possibility for change that is equally exciting and rewarding. I love seeing how the youth (and leaders) are finding innovative ways to expand the program and its possibilities as the world around us changes. When I see people who are successful, well-spoken and poised out in the world, nine times out of ten the answer to "Were you in 4-H as a kid?" is "YES!" That is awesome!
As the year comes to an end, I reflect and acknowledge how thankful I am for this 4-H program. I am so grateful for our community who pledges their heads, hearts, hands, and health to their clubs, their communities, their country and their world. We are all in this together and every time we agree to lead a project or participate in a committee, we are helping our youth grow and learn to be the leaders we need for tomorrow. So thank you. I wish you each a very happy and healthy holiday season and new year. May it be filled with love, family, friends and positivity.
Warmly,
Sara

Independence 4-H Community Service Project
Helping Afghan Refugees start a new life in the Bay Area
By Leo McDonell
|
|
In September, Independence 4-H delivered a huge box with 50 toiletry care packages to the Noor Islamic Center, who is distributing them to Afghan refugees arriving in the Bay Area. Our members donated bags filled with toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo and lip balm; and attached welcome notes. Some created bags for babies and younger children. The people at NIC were very grateful and thanked everyone in the club for their kindness and generosity, saying that, “the Afghan community thanks you greatly!” I am excited about the response to our first community service activity. This was a really cool service project because our club helped with something that was a current event we saw in the news. People came here from across the world for a safe place to live and our club helped!

State Fashion Revue National Qualifiers
For the first time, California 4-H sent three delegates to compete in the Fashion Revue at the 2020 Western National Roundup. These youth qualified in the 2019 State Fashion Revue. As previously announced, California 4-H will not be sending teams to the 2022 Western National Round-up in January in Denver, Colorado. This decision was made after many discussions with organizers of the Western National Round-Up and 4-H statewide leadership in order to comply with the current UC ANR protocols for overnight and out-of-state travel.
The four youth who qualified at the 2021 State Fashion Revue for the 2022 Western National Round-up will receive National Qualifier Plaques, in recognition of their achievement.
- Rebekah Kasperson, Los Angeles County, Cosplay Challenge (WNR constructed category)
- Emily Lavell, Sonoma County, Box Challenge (WNR constructed category)
- Aubrey Saunders, Contra Costa County, Vintage Challenge (WNR constructed category)
- Mackenzie Keslin, Monterey County, Consumer Science purchased (WNR purchased category)
We remain committed to providing a safe environment for youth to continue to grow their skills and experiences. Please consider joining our new Clothing & Textiles Advisory Committee to develop the program to offer more opportunities in the future.
