Bernie's Bark
6.09.2020
Dear Parents-

On Saturday, we celebrated the ordination of 5 men who answered the call to serve in the priesthood. This ordination was particularly meaningful to our community as we watched Joseph Moschetto become Fr. Joseph Moschetto. Fr. Moschetto is the son of our very own librarian, Mrs. Beth Moschetto! We are thankful, as Bishop Burbidge said, that Fr. Moschetto and his brother, newly ordained priests take up the mission to help heal the world! Please keep Fr. Moschetto in your prayers, along with all priests and seminarians; their vocations are strengthened by our prayers.

Last night we graduated our 8th grade students in a live stream and recorded ceremony to celebrate their accomplishments! We send off to high school 53 remarkable young men and women who are eager to start their new adventures and make their mark on the world. Please keep our graduates in your prayers, as they go into a world dealing with unprecedented circumstances.

The last day of school is tomorrow, Wednesday June 10. Teachers of grades 1-7 will host ZOOM Good Samaritan meetings, to announce the winners of this year’s Good Samaritan Award. This award is the highest honor a student can receive at SJS, and it is presented to those students who exhibit loving service to their peers. They give of their time selflessly and in a spirit of concern for the well being of others. We are proud to recognize our Good Samaritans and we thank them for enriching the lives of their classmates.

Sadly, I announce that Mrs. Michelle Chong will leave us at the end of the school year. Mrs. Chong served as our 2 White teacher, and while she only worked at SJS this one year, she made a significant contribution to our staff. Please keep Mrs. Chong in your prayers.

*****IMPORTANT**** Please Read:  Before you head off for the summer, please bag up any materials and textbooks that you have at home that need to be returned to SJS . Each child should put his or her textbooks into a bag, seal up the bag, write YOUR NAME, grade and teacher on the bag. Do this NOW, so you don’t lose anything. As soon as possible, a date will be set to return the items, but not before PHASE TWO. Each child needs his or her OWN BAG, so that materials can be accurately inventoried and returned to the proper classroom.

Dates and logistics for dropping off textbooks will be announced when available.

On behalf of Father Tom, Mrs. Carson, and the entire faculty and staff of St. Joseph Catholic School, I wish you a very happy and safe summer. Enjoy the time with your children! The school summer office hours are uncertain until further notice. The phone voicemail is monitored daily, and we can be reached by email.

Bernie’s Bark will not take a summer vacation this year and I will update you once, weekly on decisions that affect the 2020-2021 school year. As the calendar fills in, updates will also be posted on the website. Please rely on official social media for accurate information. Right now, the 2020-2021 school year is scheduled to begin Wednesday, August 26, 8:00AM-11:30AM. Afternoon Extended Day will be available until 3:00PM. Thursday, August 27 and Friday, August 28 are scheduled as whole days of school, 8:00AM-3:15PM. Dates and times will be adjusted, if necessary, in accordance with mandates from Governor Northam, OCS or the VA Department of Health.

If I can be of service throughout the summer, please let me know. We will see you back here, bright and early, Wednesday, August 26 at 8:00am!

I pray for the health and safety of our community.

Welcome one another....as Christ welcomed you!

Scoliosis Resources

It is beneficial to families of students in grades 5-9 to be aware that the prevalence of scoliosis begins to increase at about age 10 to 11 with the preadolescent growth spurt and a lateral spinal curve of 11 degrees or greater is present in about 2 to 3 percent of adolescents at the end of their growth period. Progressive curves occur three or four times more frequently in girls than in boys. Scoliosis tends to run in families, and if scoliosis is diagnosed, other siblings should be evaluated. We can help families by providing information on Scoliosis so they are aware of what to look for and when an additional evaluation may be necessary. Some shared resources are below that you may utilize for parent information and education
