The Resiliency Academy consists of five two-hour sessions of virtual learning. Each session will focus on a different resilience topic with related readings, videos, and online content. Businesses will receive the tools and support they need to develop or update their business resiliency plan. GCCC Executive Director, Elyse Crossman, will be participating in this academy and looks forward to seeing some Claremont area businesses join her.

The Claremont Opera House is getting some much needed restoration. The exterior features nine, large, stained-glass windows, along with many other smaller accent windows. Six of the windows are on either side of the seating in the opera house and were covered with decorated covers to black out the space for performances. While there have been minor repairs over the years, all of the windows were essentially intact in place for almost 125 years and served their purpose well. Time and the elements have taken their toll. Some are on the verge of literally falling apart, and all of them are overdue for maintenance. Thanks to the foresight of our directors and the efforts of former Executive Director Louanne Lewit and current board member John Bennett, the Claremont Opera House has been named as the recipient of two $20K NH State Conservation Committee (NH SCC) Moose Plate grants to help fund the work.

The proposal identified thirteen windows adjacent to the Opera House as needing repair and restoration. Tom Driscoll, owner of Sash & Solder based in the historic Button Factory building in Portsmouth was selected to remove, restore, and reinstall the windows in phases, prioritizing the windows most in danger of failing. Driscoll relaunched his personal restoration business in 2015 after spending fifteen years restoring windows in the Boston area and across New England. He spent five years at Serpentino Stained Glass, a studio in Needham, MA with an international reputation for excellence in historical restorations. There he worked on projects such as the restoration of windows from Temple Emanuel in Manhattan, the Culinary Institute of America in Poughkeepsie, and chapels at Princeton University and Boston College. Recent work includes: churches in Manchester, Portsmouth, Concord, and Belfast ME; a meeting house in Epsom; and the NH State House.

The total cost for this restoration is $112,000 and improvement is projected to likely come in around another to $12,000 to $15,000. Funding is still needed for this and other projects, and the Claremont Opera House needs the community's help to raise money. More information can be found online here.

Dedicated in 1897, the Claremont Opera House has long been a cultural hub for the region, but closed in the 1960s due to disuse. A team of dedicated leaders, elected officials, and community members came together, developed a plan, and dedicated thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to save the space and it had a grand re-opening of the Opera House on May 26, 1979. Since that time, Friends of the Opera House and Boards of Directors have raised funds to maintain and expand the venue’s capabilities to host national touring acts, community events and locally-produced programming. During the downtime of the pandemic, the Board and staff of the Opera House have been very active to ensure that the facility will not only be ready to host performances and events but also continue to protect and preserve the unique historic aspects of the venue itself. Several other projects have been identified as needing attention and are moving forward.

Vital Communities, a regional nonprofit located in White River Junction, VT, seeks a full time Project Coordinator to implement successful, equitable, inclusive, and community-based projects across multiple issue areas. Initial project assignments will include an e-bike subsidy pilot program and the third round of a crowd-funding campaign supporting locally-owned businesses. The Project Coordinator will lead these and other projects in collaboration with staff and community partners. In a way to help show off our region, one of the projects I’m collecting pictures for is to highlight on county war memorials and to display these in a video on our Sullivan County New Hampshire Government Facebook page and through the video banner of pictures on the website www.sullivancounty.gov  during Memorial Day weekend 2021.
