Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.

Construction Updates

In July, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:


Area 1: Reston Avenue to Colvin Forest Drive (Except Baron Cameron Avenue Intersection)


Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Baron Cameron Avenue

  • Completed drilling for noise barrier foundations along westbound Route 7 between Riva Ridge Drive and Great Passage Boulevard.
  • Completed noise barrier post installation along westbound Route 7 between Amanda Drive and Riva Ridge Drive, and started post installation between Riva Ridge Drive and Baron Cameron Avenue.
  • Completed noise barrier panel installation along eastbound Route 7 between Reston Avenue and Reston Parkway.
  • Placed curb stone and base asphalt for Stage 3B between Amanda Drive and Baron Cameron Avenue.


Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way

  • Began noise barrier post installation along eastbound Route 7 between Baron Cameron Avenue and Delta Glen Court.
  • Continued fine grading for Stage 3A along westbound Route 7 between Colvin Forest Drive and Baron Cameron Avenue.


Area 2: Baron Cameron Intersection


  • Placed cement-treated aggregate and asphalt for Stage 2C and continued intersection reconstruction work.


Area 3: Difficult Run Area (Colvin Forest Drive to Faulkner Drive)


  • Completed stone and asphalt placement for Stage 2 between the pedestrian underpass at Colvin Run Mill Park and Serenity Woods Lane.
  • Finished construction of the approach slabs and outer bridge rail, completed deck grooving, and shifted eastbound Route 7 traffic to the new Difficult Run bridge.


Area 4: Faulkner Drive to Jarrett Valley Drive



  • Completed drilling for noise barrier foundations along eastbound Route 7 between Atwood Road and Towlston Road, and between Laurel Hill Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.
  • Continued storm sewer installation between Newcombs Farm Road and Beulah Road, and between Wolftrap Run Road and Lewinsville Road.
  • Placed curb stone, installed curb, and placed asphalt for Stage 3A between Serenity Woods Lane and Middleton Ridge Road. 
  • Completed storm sewer installation along the future right turn-lane from westbound Route 7 to the relocated portion of Lewinsville Road. 
  • Continued road construction activities at Lewinsville Road in preparation for the upcoming opening of the displaced left-turn lane.  

Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.

Looking Ahead: Lewinsville Road

Detours of Lewinsville Road are scheduled for Aug. 26-29 as crews continue construction of the new intersection. Click here for detour details.


The work is in preparation for the Aug. 29 opening of the new displaced-left turn from eastbound Route 7 to Lewinsville Road.


All work is weather-permitting.

Construction activities along Route 7 will continue in 2022, and additional traffic shifts and temporary detours will occur along Route 7 during the summer and fall months. Please see the project website for information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.
