Join us Tuesday, Oct 11 when we will host a post-show community discussion about the show, the process of selection, the creative process, and how the high school faculty and students have recognized and discussed Theodor Seuss Geisel's racism alongside a production of this musical, based on his works, that celebrates worthy themes.

Baking in the Nursery

Bread Recipe

Makes enough for 12 children to eat in school and take a roll home, too, so you can halve the recipe at home!

  • 3 cups warm water (we usually boil in the kettle and let it sit until it's warm)
  • 1/3 to 1/2 cup honey
  • 2.5 Tbsp yeast
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup oil (we use olive)
  • around 8 cups of All-Purpose flour (we use more for sprinkling on the table and keeping small hands from getting sticky)
  • lots of Love! :)

Mix honey into warm water and add yeast. Wait until bubbles form.

Add oil and salt and mix together. Gradually add flour until a dough is formed that is soft and not too sticky. Continue kneading and shape the dough into rolls, or whatever shapes the children fancy!

Bake at 350° for approximately 12 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy with butter and honey!

Parent-Child Classes Are Returning in October!

We’re excited to announce that Parent-Child classes are returning this fall! These Saturday morning classes are an opportunity for caregivers and children to explore Waldorf play spaces together and to experience the Waldorf approach to nurturing and engaging with very young children.

Upcoming Events

Michaelmas Festival

Thursday, Sept 29 at 12:45pm

Our annual Michaelmas festival marks the time of the year when we begin to turn inward as the daylight hours grow shorter and the weather colder, and the grade 1-12 students come together to celebrate the turning of the seasons and gather strength for the coming months. Due to the gym construction, our celebration will look a bit different than past years.

For current families who plan to attend, please see this week's Lower School Notes or High School Notes for details.

Meet the School Counselor

Thursday October 13 from 7–8pm

Our School Counselor, Jessica Gottlieb, will hold a Zoom “Meet the School Counselor” evening for our community in October. She will speak about her role in the school and answer questions from the community. Before the event, Ms. Gottlieb invites members of our community to submit questions in advance so that she can best prepare for the meeting. Submit questions in advance.

Adult Education Evening: Anxiety in Unsteady Times

With Dr. Dan Einstein, MD - Anthroposophic Doctor

Thursday, October 20 from 7:30-8:30pm at WWS

As Covid restrictions recede, we find ourselves in a society profoundly changed by the experience. The full scope of those changes will not be known for many years, but an increase in anxiety is a part of it. Educators and researchers have both noted dramatic increases in anxiety in our children as the pandemic hit. In an effort to help parents cope with these changes, this talk will explore what contributes to anxiety, how those factors have changed, and how we might think about helping our young people.

Admission Events Start Again in October

You'll notice that school tours are starting to pop up on the school calendar. October is the beginning of the admissions season for next fall. Our October morning tours are almost full and we will share dates for November tours very soon.

How You Can Help

Spread the Word! Many parents find schools by hearing about their friends' experiences - or even from chatting with a stranger in a park! If you know someone that might be interested in learning more about WWS, please share our upcoming events with them.

https://www.washingtonwaldorf.org/admissions/visit-us/

Volunteer! A few of our events offer the opportunity for prospective families to meet with current families. If you are interested in volunteering for one of theses events, email the enrollment office to let them know.

From the Parent/Family Organization

Connecting sitters from the WWS community with families seeking them: We have an email group list for this purpose!

  • If you are SEEKING a sitter, DO NOT join the group. You will send an email to WWSsitters@groups.io with your job posting, and sitters will respond directly to you if they are interested.
  • If YOU ARE A SITTER and would like to receive job postings, visit https://groups.io/g/WWSsitters and click "Join this Group" at the bottom of the page.
  • WWS students may participate only with their parents' permission.

THANK YOU! - Donation Drive for Displaced Migrant Families

From Robin Leake (WWS Parent)

Dear Washington Waldorf Families,

Thank you so much to everyone who was inspired to make a donation for the migrant families being bussed to our region from the border. We collected 19 bags of clothing, 4 bags of shoes, and a generous helping of hygiene products. Thank you for all of the generosity shown and for your support. Without you, this drive would not have been such a success. I’m so very grateful to be a part of such a caring community. Thank you.

Kindly,

Robin Leake
