The 964 was 85% new as compared to its predecessor, the Carrera 3.2. A new naturally aspirated engine (M64) was used. Porsche substantially revised the suspension, replacing torsion bars with coil springs and shock absorbers. (the first major engineering changes since the original 911). Power steering and ABS brakes were added for the first time. The exterior bumpers and fog lamps became flush with the car for better aerodynamics. A new electric rear spoiler raised at speeds above 50 mph (80 km/h) and lowered flush with the rear engine lid at lower speeds. A revised interior featured standard dual airbags, and new automatic climate control system provided improved heating and cooling.
This car, a Guards Red/Black two-wheel-drive Carrera 2, is often cited as the more engaging version of the 964 cars from a driver's standpoint, as the cars are about 220 pounds lighter and have a bit more front trunk space. Still quick, it will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of 162 mph – and its four piston, ventilated disc front & rear brakes will haul it down quickly and with confidence.
This 964 has been kept as original, with OEM-level replacement parts as necessary - with the exception of a modern Alpine audio system with CD, Bluetooth and Sirius XM, with appropriate speakers. Tires are new (100 miles) Michelin Pilot Sport All Season, mounted on the original 16 in. Porsche wheels.
The Carfax report shows one accident reported as “very minor damage”, in 2000. A three ring binder containing photos, plus files of parts purchases, repairs, and receipts during current ownership (since 2005, with some from prior ownership) are included. Also included is the tool kit, air compressor, jack and lug wrench, also a “bra”, car cover, and two sets of keys.
