Ontario Sailing's COVID-19 Response
Premier Ford's June 8th Announcement

June 9, 2020

Reopening of Ontario is moving forward, one step at a time. With two days of new case numbers below 300, there is good news all around for the province of Ontario to begin to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. These are all positive steps towards allowing sailors in Ontario to enjoy more of their favourite activities on the water. Ontario Sailing has been working hard to stay on top of each government announcement and how they may impact all of our member organizations.

Premier Ford made a highly anticipated announcement yesterday moving the province forward in reopening. There are many unclear areas from this announcement and we need to wait for the regulations supporting the announcement to be released with the details of the changes in the law that will come into effect on Friday, June 12th.  As soon as the details of the regulations are available, we will do our best to communicate to the leaders of all our member organizations how they impact sailing.

The announcement did give some indications that the social gathering size would increase across the province. Also, in some regions there may be potential for some team sport practices as long as physical distancing practices are maintained. Additionally, while there was no green light for summer day camps for July and August, it was promised that more information would be coming shortly about guidelines.

Throughout the pandemic, we have been consistent in reminding everyone that the laws in Ontario are different than other parts of Canada and other countries and that each municipality has also added specific requirements. The recent announcement highlights even further that there will be more regional differences, and everyone will need to be cautious and informed about what is permitted in any region in which they are sailing.

This is a great step to celebrate! Ontario Sailing will work as efficiently as possible to help provide clarity to the Ontario laws and Public Health recommendations and share information with our member organizations as it becomes available.

We encourage every sailor to support your organization's leadership and be patient as we await the detailed information that is needed to make decisions about what this next stage looks like for sailing.

Stay Safe, Stay Patient and Stay Tuned!

Sincerely,
