Children's Ministry
Living Liturgy: Part 8
How do we know if we are loving as Jesus commanded in this week’s gospel (John 14:15-21)? Jesus’ command to love is impossible without the presence of the Spirit who abides with you and in you. AND the Spirit of truth, the Advocate, the one who is on your side – not on your case – is with you and in you always because Jesus said so. We can tap into that deep well of God’s abiding presence.

In “Sleeping with Bread, Holding What Gives You Life” by Dennis Linn, Sheila Fabricant Linn and Matthew Linn they describe the ancient prayer practice of Daily Examen as a way to make a connection with God’s presence in life evident in the activity and action of the day. They offer these questions to look back on your day and notice the ways God has been with you. So ask yourself: “When did I give and receive the most love today? When did I give and receive the least love today?” May the peace that passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Music Notes from Tom Paulson
(Jesus said,) This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you,
and he will be in you. (John 14:17, from Gospel reading Sunday May 17, 2020)

When was the last time you used the word abide in daily conversation...? Yeah, I don’t remember either. I know it occurs several times in the Bible – abide in me, abide in love – and we sing “Abide with me, fast falls the eventide,” but it is not one of my go-to words. Webster defines it this way: to accept or act in accordance with. Jesus is teaching us, and all his followers to accept or act in accordance with the Spirit of truth.

On Sunday Jodi Barnett is singing May It Be, a beautiful song from the Lord of the Rings.
May it be an evening star shines down upon you.
May it be when darkness falls your heart will be true
You walk a lonely road; oh, how far you are from home.
Believe, and you will find your way.
A promise lives within you now.

Take a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RugSclNY4y8 . The song is about finding your way through darkness and difficulty. To paraphrase Psalm 23: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not be afraid, for you are with me. In the words of this song, and in the hopefulness of its melody, I can hear Jesus’ promise and the psalmist’s words of assurance. The Spirit will be with me with me, and will not forsake me. Perhaps that is what it means to abide.

Also on Sunday, Tom Barnett is going to lead the congregation in praying the Lord’s Prayer. Normally we’d all speak it together led by one of the pastors. But there are several sung versions that are reasonably familiar, and Tom will lead us in singing a version by Albert Hay Malotte. It is often sung at funerals, but I don’t think it should be reserved only for times of mourning. So sing with Tom from home.

Join in Global Prayer TODAY
Lutheran World Federation President Archbishop Panti Filibus Musa and General Secretary Rev. Dr. Martin Junge have joined Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in a call for a worldwide prayer, to bring different faiths together for the good of humanity on May 14.

"The world needs unity and solidarity across borders to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to humble prayer and supplication to God, our faiths inspire us to persevere in supporting one another, health workers, and scientists who are working tirelessly for medical solutions."

Looking Ahead
Minneapolis Area Synod Memorial Day Weekend Worship
The Mpls. Area Synod would like to thank all leaders for their ministries and offer an opportunity for respite. Thus the synod staff will be providing worship services for use during the weekends of May 23-24 and July 4-5 and Crown of Glory will be participating!

In the place of our livestream worship service, we will provide a worship service lead by our Synod staff. The service will include a sermon by Bishop Ann Svennungsen, a children’s sermon by Pastor John Hulden, and a full worship service with liturgy, hymns, sermon, and children’s sermon.

We will share the worship link and downloadable bulletin via our Crown Connections and website next week. We are excited to offer these worship experiences!
Help Coping for Carver County Residents
Coping with the changes during the pandemic brings challenges into our lives. Perhaps you feel lonely, sad or anxious due to the uncertainty of the situation. The Stay at Home order, meaning many of us are isolated with family members or alone, can bring challenges as well.

Carver County’s First Street Center, our local community mental health center located in Waconia, offers County residents a free online video support group for those struggling with difficult emotions and thoughts during the COVID-19 crisis. This support group listens and provides caring advice for one other. This isn’t a therapy group where you deal with intense conditions. Rather, this group offers listening, understanding, and ideas on coping with the current pandemic on a day-to-day basis.

Any County resident can participate free of charge, whether you’re a client of First Street Center or not. The group begins on Thursday, May 14 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., continuing every Thursday. You attend the group as needed, with no weekly commitment necessary.

Interested residents should call First Street Center to register at (952)442-4437.
