Dear Parish Leadership:

Today many of us have been inundated with information regarding the CARES Act and how churches may qualify for possible sources of funding to help with salary, benefits, and other expenses. For the most part, the information from many sources is similar so I will not provide extensive detail in this email. I have included several links to information I have received from various sources.

Below is a list of what I think are the most important details to consider and the steps to take today.
  • If your parish intends to apply for Paycheck Protection Program under the CARES Act, you should reach out to your financial institution (bank) immediately. Currently there are about 1,800 banks approved to provide these loans. Many of these banks have already posted information on their website on how to apply.
  • If your bank will not be offering this program, you need to find a bank that will be accepting applications. You may want to choose a larger bank in your local area or you can visit www.midpennbank.com. Mid Penn Bank is accepting applications from non-customers.
  • The application process and the documentation needed will vary from bank to bank.

For parishes that do not have any employees and only uses supply clergy, you still may be able to apply for this program. I have not yet seen official guidance, but initial indications are that 1099 compensation may be eligible compensation under this program.
