6th Grade Transition Days
The revised Safe Learning Plan calls for Middle School students to start hybrid learning through a phased in process. On Thursday, October 22, 6th grade students in Cohort A (last name A-K students) will be attending a transition event and on Friday, October 23, 6th grade students in Cohort B (last names L-Z students) will be attending the same activity. The purpose of the event is to allow 6th grade students to meet all their teachers, attend all of their classes and briefly get more acquainted with the building, as well as basic procedures required when coming to school. The event will be held from 8:30-10:30 a.m. each day. Transportation will be provided on these days and families should have received an email regarding bus stop information.

Students coming to school should remember to do the following on these days and every day thereafter.

**All students must adhere to social distancing, hygiene protocols and wearing of your mask appropriately at all times--pages 29 & 32-35.
**Review your schedule and know the name and room number of your first period teacher. No other learning materials are required to be brought to school this day. A schedule for the transition day will be ready for you in your first period class.
**If riding the bus to school review the time and location for pick-up that will be sent to your family by Oct. 19, via email and procedures outlined in Hybrid Learning document--page 21.
**If walking or coming to school by car look at the school map on how to enter school property and school building--page 9.
**Review general information on: hallway social distancing, visitor, locker use, etc.--page 13.
**Students should ask their teacher any questions they may have on the days preceding the transition day event.

**More information may be attained by completely reviewing the document titled: "Preparing For 6-8 Hybrid Learning" sent to your email account last night.

On behalf of the staff who work at the middle school, I welcome all families who have chosen in-person hybrid learning and are planning on attending the transition learning days next week. We believe this will prepare you for your first full day of in-person school on Monday, October 26th.

Principal
Preparing for 6-8 Hybrid Learning Guide
Beginning October 26, St. Louis Park Middle School will implement a phased approach to bringing students back to school in the hybrid model.

As the Middle School reopens, we will continue to prioritize a safe learning environment for students, teachers, staff, families, and the greater community.

Important and Exciting Change in Conferences
To begin this school year, we had individual meetings with students, family, and their Advisory teacher. These meetings were overwhelmingly appreciated by all participants and when we surveyed all groups (parents/guardians, students, and staff), the lowest single group that selected "strongly agree" when asked if we should continue this format was 83%! We are going to continue this meeting style in a different setting, parent-teacher conferences, which we knew had to change from what we've done in the past due to COVID-19.

On Wednesday, November 11, and after school on Thursday, November 12, St. Louis Park Middle School will have their parent/guardian-teacher conferences, but now will be a student-led conference with their family and Advisory teacher present. The student-led conference will be 25 minutes in length and students will begin preparing to lead these meetings in Advisory class starting next week. Student-led conference times will be from 9:10 a.m.-7:50 p.m. on November 11, and from 4:25-7:50 p.m. on the November 12.

On Friday, October 30, a Sign-Up Genius will be sent to you from your child's Advisory teacher asking that you sign up for the time that works best for you and your student on either November 11 or 12.  At this point, we are planning that families can select whether this will be an in-person or virtual student-led conference.

This new format will be introduced to students on Wednesday, October 21, in Advisory. Over the next 3-4 weeks, please ask your student how the preparation is going for their student-led conference.

It's Time to Check Out Library Books
The St. Louis Park Middle School library media center is pleased to announce that students can begin checking out books and picking them up "curbside" (in the front entrance foyer) next week! We will be accepting students requests and holds via our Destiny Catalog online. Instructions for how to request and hold books can be found here. We have many new books and thousands upon thousands of great middle school books both in English and Spanish. Students can check out books for pleasure reading and/or for school assignments using our new system. Please contact Greg Holmbeck, library media specialist, or Diane Vig with questions at [email protected] and [email protected], respectively. Happy Reading!!
Congratulations Spelling Bee Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the first round of the SLPMS Spelling Bee! The following students are invited to participate in Round 2 of the Spelling Bee, which MAY be held on Monday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Middle School Media Center classrooms (COVID-19 restrictions permitting). Alternately, we MAY be able to do an online Bee provided by Scripps, the organization that runs the National Bee. More details about Round 2 will be distributed as the event date approaches. The SLPMS Spelling Bee will determine our representative to the Metro Area Bee in March, if one is held.

Students Voting Program
St. Louis Park Public Schools will be participating in the Students Voting program this fall. Students in grades 2-12 will participate in this statewide mock election program. This program will be implemented in place of Kids Voting USA in St. Louis Park this year.

This year, for the first time, the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State and the YMCA Center for Youth Voice are working together to help students statewide discover the importance of elections and the power of their voice – and their vote – in our democracy.

Students Voting gives teachers at all grade levels the tools and resources to expose their students to a comprehensive voting experience whether it's online or in person that includes learning about candidates and issues, voter registration and casting a ballot on or before Election day.
