Restaurant, Brewery, and Winery Relief Program
The San Mateo County Economic Development Association announced this week the development of the Restaurant, Brewery, and Winery Relief Program facilitated through SMC Strong. This program will provide grants of up to $10,000 to each qualifying business to cover operating expenses such as rent, payroll, and facility accommodations to allow for indoor/ outdoor dining.

The grants do not need to be repaid and there is no fee to apply. The application portal at smcstrong.org opened on Monday, February 22nd at noon and will close on Monday, March 8th at noon.

Those who apply will not be prioritized on a first-come-first-served basis. Instead, all eligible applications will be placed in a pool with other applications from the same city and recipients will be selected at random until all the grants appropriated for that city are exhausted.

"Building on a month of strong results, the Biden-Harris Administration and the U.S. Small Business Administration are taking steps with the Paycheck Protection Program to further promote equitable relief for America’s mom-and-pop businesses.

The latest round of Paycheck Protection Program funding opened one month ago and already the Biden Administration has succeeded in making major improvements to the program’s implementation:

  • For businesses with fewer than ten employees, the share of funding is up nearly 60%
  • For businesses in rural communities, the share of funding is up nearly 30%
  • The share of funding distributed through Community Development Financial Institutions and Minority Depository Institutions is up more than 40%"

Overnight Closures On U.S. 101: Week of Feb. 28th
As part of the San Mateo 101 Express Lanes Project, Caltrans will be replacing five overhead sign structures on U.S. 101. The first step of this work is to safely remove the sign structures and install temporary orange roadside signs along the freeway shoulder. Due to the large size of these sign structures, it is necessary to close one direction of the freeway at a time between Millbrae Avenue and South Airport Boulevard for five nights.

Overnight closures on U.S. 101 will occur each night during the week of February 28th (from 11 pm to 4 am), when traffic volumes are usually light. Motorists are advised to be familiar with the proposed detour routes and allow extra travel time.

Freeway Closures:
  • Southbound U.S. 101 from South Airport Boulevard to San Bruno Avenue is anticipated to be closed overnight on Sunday, February 28th, Monday, March 1st, and Tuesday, March 2nd to safely remove three sign structures.
  • Northbound U.S. 101 from Millbrae Avenue to San Bruno Avenue is anticipated to be closed overnight on Wednesday, March 3rd, and Thursday, March 4th to safely remove two sign structures.

Standing Up for Change: African American Women and the Civil Rights Movement
In the 20th century, African American women formed the backbone of the modern Civil Rights Movement. They were the critical mass, the grassroots leaders challenging America to embrace justice and equality for all.

A docent from the National Women's History Museum will share women’s critical roles in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Little Rock’s Central High School integration, and the little-known women behind the scenes of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
