Dear Fashion District Property Owner,

Now that Spring has arrived, we begin the daunting task of trimming the 801 trees in the Fashion District. We have signed a contract with Trimming Land Company, and you should expect to see them in the District within the next week or two.

The arrival of Spring, a lessening of COVID restrictions and an increase in vaccines are all resulting in an increase in pedestrian activity. The peak day for the Santee Alley, one of our most busy areas, was Saturday, March 27th with 9300+ pedestrians traveling through the intersection (an increase of 12% from the month before). Speaking of vaccines, the BID partnered with the Mayor’s Office the past two weeks in assisting with setting up vaccine appointments in the Flower District. We hope to see these mobile sign-up efforts spread to other parts of the District in the coming weeks.

Our marketing efforts continue to encourage residents and visitors to safely shop, dine, and do business in the district by highlighting a variety of businesses that are open, including details regarding newly reopened sectors and updated capacity limits. We continue to shine a light on small businesses through our #SmallBizLove series. Here are some recent marketing highlights:

Of course, we still have some challenges ahead:

  • Homeless counts are the same as the previous month with 577 unhoused people living in the district.

  • Over the past year there has been an increase in fires. If your property has had a fire and it resulted in issues with fire insurance, Assembly Member Miguel Santiago's office is working on a solution. Complete and submit a Request for Assistance (RFA), so the CA Department of Insurance (CDI) may look into this. An RFA may be completed & submitted through CDI’s website: https://cdiapps.insurance.ca.gov/CP/login/. Send  Serapia.Kim@asm.ca.gov the seven-digit case number you receive upon submission so the CDI may have it tagged as a request from the Assembly Member’s office and forward it to CDI’s Ombudsman office. If possible, attach any non-renewal notices/evidence of exorbitant price increases.

  • The Chauvin Trial is expected to conclude by the end of April before going to the jury deliberation. LAPD has deployment plans in place, as it is expected that we'll see activity/protests around the verdict. We'll keep you updated as we receive more information.

  • Crime and graffiti continue to challenge us. We are working closely with LAPD and individual property owners to find creative solutions.

We have some exciting new economic development and grant opportunities for existing property owners AND merchants. The best way to stay informed about the status of these programs and opportunities is via email. Please make sure your commercial tenants are subscribed to our emails. You can direct them to sign up for our emails HERE.

Stay well,
