Dr. Gregory Fuller and Music in the Age of Covid-19
On Sep. 29, Dr. Gregory Fuller, Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music at the University of Southern Mississippi, joined the Huntsville Master Chorale to discuss how university choirs are finding ways to sing during this time.
Dr. Fuller was encouraging and shared several methods for singing safely using masking, social distancing, and small ensembles. His rehearsals with various groups use a mixture of those methods, while being sure to limit group size and exposure time. He said his singers have been very patient with the process, and have been diligent about adhering to all safety guidelines. While COVID-19 has created challenges, Dr. Fuller feels optimistic that musicians will soon be able to return to traditional methods. In the meantime, he and others continue to use their creativity to find safe ways to make music and train young performers.
As an added bonus, Dr. Fuller shared a bit about what Dr. Patricia Hacker was like as a graduate student at Southern Miss. (No surprises there - she was a wonderful, dedicated student and one of his favorites!) We also learned that one of our singers, Tim Lewis, was once a roommate of Dr. Fuller's when they studied together at Oklahoma Baptist University!
