Welcome to Council Member-Elect Kliewer
Donald Kliewer
Our City Council will soon be full again as Ward 2 Council Member-Elect Donald Kliewer prepares to step into that formerly vacant seat next week. Join us in welcoming him to the Council at a reception on Monday, August 29, at 5 p.m. at City Hall. Cookies and coffee will be served. Council Member-Elect Kliewer will officially be sworn in at the City Council Budget Workshop immediately following the reception.
Growing Accessibility
Accessible Community Garden Informational Meeting
Would you use an accessible community garden? Hear how one could happen in Red Wing at 11 a.m. on August 27 at the Public Library. Community gardens are a great asset in our city. This garden would include raised beds and be more accessible, especially for people who use wheelchairs or require other adaptive accommodations. Come this Saturday to discuss how we grow from here. Can't make it? Express your interest by calling 651.800.1118 or emailing rwacg@yahoo.com.
We Have a Winner
Hallstrom's building downtown Red Wing
The first-ever Red Wing Redevelopment Challenge (organized by Downtown Main Street) has put forth a winner. Bush Street Investments plans to revitalize the Hallstrom's building at 317 Bush Street. Their project proposal includes adding five residential units to the second story, improving the exterior façade, and preserving the building's historic integrity. City Council approved $50,000 from the Downtown Investment Fund last night; additional contributions from other community partners will determine the challenge's total financial contribution to the project. Construction is expected to start this fall, and we can't wait to see the final result.
Drop In To This Open House
Drinking Water Institute
From August 1-3, the Utilities Division hosted the 2022 Drinking Water Institute at the Twin Bluffs plant, welcoming teachers from across the state, state agency representatives, and industry leaders. You can tour the plant at a September 17 open house.
Ever wondered about the journey water takes to get to your faucet? Here's your chance for a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into providing our community with a steady stream of safe water. Head to Twin Bluffs Water Treatment Plant (1468 Pioneer Road) for an open house on Saturday, September 17, from noon to 3 p.m. Take a tour, interact with staff, and get lots of information about Red Wing's water. Well, water you waiting for? Mark this open house on your calendar today!
A Site For Your Eyes
Binocular viewing station at Colvill Park
It's a sight you've got to see. Get spectacular up-close views of birds, other wildlife, and the river with this new binocular viewing station installed on the west side of Colvill Park. It's accessible and open to all. Red Wing Park Naturalist and the Wings Foundation brought this project to the park, and Public Works completed the installation earlier this month. Take a trip to Colvill Park to check it out now, and make sure to come back for an incredible eagle-watching experience this winter.
Recognizing Valor
It's been almost three years since the Eisenhower Bridge of Valor, named to honor veterans, law enforcement, firefighters, and other heroes, opened to traffic, but the story behind the bridge is still being told. A dedication ceremony for the bridge was held on Saturday, August 7, spanning the decades with stories of courage and valor, displays of patriotism, and more. Watch a highlight reel of the dedication in this video.
Building the Budget
Want to make your voice heard in our City's budget discussions? Now's a great time to do so. Budget discussions continued at last night's City Council meeting, but there is still plenty of time to add your input to the conversation. In fact, your next chance to do so is just around the corner! Attend the City Council Budget Workshop at 5 p.m. on Monday, August 29. Have something to say right now? Email the City Council and Mayor to submit your comments.
What's a PUPP?
If you've heard the term PUPP thrown around before, you might have wondered what exactly that is. Well, we can assure that it has nothing to do with the other kind of pup – unless it's a parade of dogs heading down Main Street. The term PUPP actually stands for Private Use of Public Property. Learn more about what a PUPP form is and how you can find it on our website by watching this video.
All in a Day's Work
Kay Kuhlmann
City Administrator Kay Kuhlmann fell in love with Red Wing on her honeymoon. She decided to grab an application for the open City Administrator position, and 25 years later, the rest is history. Since then, Kay has taken charge of enacting Council policies and leading day-to-day operations. She says, “It’s kind of amazing. I look around and see how much has changed. Overall, it feels really good.” When she's not at City Hall, Kay is known to be found plucking weeds out of her flower garden, completing library challenges, and keeping up with five grandchildren. Kay always knew she never wanted to leave the state she grew up in, and we're happy she's made Red Wing her home.
