Dear SPN Families,
Last night we had our first School Advisory Board meeting of the 2022-23 school year.
Our School Board is comprised of parent volunteers who chair committees devoted to supporting the school financially and with strategic planning. One of the newer committees on the Board is The Belonging and Inclusion Committee. This committee includes parents and faculty, and convened last year under the guidance of Justine Lazaro (parent of 1st and 3rd grade boys), who has professional expertise in the area of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Mission of this committee is: To cultivate a deeper appreciation for the different backgrounds, cultures, and identities represented at St. Philip Neri, and to honor the uniqueness of each individual and family to build a strong and inclusive community.
September 15th kicked off National Hispanic Heritage Month in the U.S. The 15th is significant as it is the anniversary of independence for many Latin American countries. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. In addition, Día de la Raza, October 12th, is a holiday celebrated in many Latin American countries to honor the diverse people groups in their region.
Nearly 20% of our students and their families identify themselves as Hispanic. We appreciate the diversity of our school community, which enhances our population and our experiences with one another. We commend the many contributions of Hispanic families and individuals which have positively impacted our community and our country.
As we acknowledge and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it is relevant to mention the many ways our students learn and appreciate Hispanic heritage here at SP. Senora Romero, our K-5 Spanish teacher, provides exposure to many aspects of Hispanic culture for our students so they become familiar with countries, customs, traditions, and vocabulary.
Students also learn about notable Hispanics in Religion through stories of saints and people who model faith in their lives and work. The Fourth Grade studies the history of California with its significant Hispanic influence and impact. Our middle school students study the history and culture of many Spanish speaking countries. Finally, the literature based English Language Arts curriculum in middle school features Hispanic authors and themes while our primary grades and Library also include many Hispanic authors and stories.
