First VAST Meeting of 2016/2017 Year - Sept. 1
Guest Speaker: Mary Karam
|
The VAST Season will begin with Artist-Gallery Owner-Photographer, Mary Karam. She was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, raised on an orange grove in Orange County, California and has spent most of her adult life in Texas. Karam has traveled extensively, giving rise to the spirit of her work. Mary has owned and operated the MK Gallery in Denison, Texas for 12 years.
Ms. Karam's use of the Snapseed and Aviary Apps coupled with Photoshop and large format printing has launched her into many avenues of creativity she never imagined during those old darkroom days
in 1989! This interest has led to numerous one-on-one sessions and workshops with friends and groups.
Mary Karam will talk to the members of VAST about her digital art, provide insight into her images, and provide information on working with your own digital images.
Meetings start at 7pm, end at 9pm. They are held at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 E. Hickory Street, Denton.
Cost for program: Members, free; Guests, $3

In the Cold Morning Light |
|
My work has been inspired by a love of COLOR and TEXTURE. I love the beautiful gradations of colors in Odilon Redon, Georgia O'Keeffe and Helen Frankenthaler's works. The lines and colorful patterns in Henri Matisse's work delight me. Pablo Picasso, Joseph Cornell and Louise Nevelson inspire me with their use of mixed media and assemblage/collage in their art. These artists were creative and productive their whole lives. Their lives and their works encourage me to keep working.

Diebenkorn, Texas |
Over the years I have worked in a variety of media; acrylic, handmade paper, wood assemblage, and encaustic wax painting. Collage is often an important part of my work in any media, since I collect things. My studio is filled with stacks of handmade papers, fabrics, geographic maps, postage stamps, and other miscellaneous items. I often embed these items from our lives into my works in an effort to create connections with the viewer by using symbols of our sense of place, our communications, memories and associations. Then there is that constant desire to create COLOR and TEXTURE that compel one to pause and look."

"Through the Ages"
exhibition at the Denton Senior Center
Husband and wife, Eloise and Ray Sears, will be showing their work at the Denton Senior Center through September, 2016.
Eloise Sears
, a Denton resident since 1957, loved to draw and paint as a child, and she feels fortunate to have been able to fulfill her
dream of pursuing painting in retirement. The transparent, painterly qualities of watercolor drew her to that medium, and she remains captivated by its somewhat unpredictable nature. Eloise has taken classes with local watercolorist, Jo Williams, and participated in
workshops with other artists, including Nel dorn Byrd. She is currently serving as VAST Secretary, and and is a signature member of the Society of Watercolor Artists. Her work has been exhibited in the Richardson Civic Art Society Regional Exhibition, SWA International Exhibition, SWA Members Exhibitions, as well as VAST Members Exhibitions, calendars and Merging Visions exhibitions, the latter being a collaboration of works by VAST artists and the Denton Poet Assembly.
Ray Sears has enjoyed taking photographs since his retirement
when he had much more time to
travel and see many interesting places. With Eloise being a watercolorist, photography has been a way for them to share their artistic interests. Ray has participated in the following VAST activities: Members Exhibitions, the Calendar and in
Merging Visions exhibitions.
