HISD will be observing Chavez-Herta Day, Monday, March 29th and students have a Spring Holiday Friday, April 2. Our campus will be closed both of these days.

Coca-Cola Scholars
Congratulations to Annie Zhu and Shirley Zhu for being named 2 of the 150 high school seniors named as Coca-Cola Scholars. They will each receive a $20,000 college scholarship and join a family of 6,450+ alumni who are leading positive change in their communities and around the world.
Less than 1/6th of 1% of applicants were chosen to receive this extremely competitive award. These 150 students, who were selected from an initial pool of 99,403 applications from across the country, not only exemplify superior leadership, service, and academics – they are change agents, positively affecting others in their communities. We are #CardinalProud of both of them!

One Act Play
Bellaire's UIL One Act Play, After the Blast, was named Alternate at the UIL District contest on Saturday. Several students received individual awards. Tyrone Mathis earned a Best Technician award, Leah Harvell earned an All-Star cast award. Reem Kazzaz and Jonah Dove earned Honorable Mention All-star cast awards. #CardinalProud

Technical Theatre Student Advances to State
Abbie Hart has qualified to compete in the category of Costume Design for the UIL Theatrical Design Contest at the state level. Abbie was tasked with reading, researching and creating her own original costume design based on the musical “Man of La Mancha”. She spent weeks researching, designing, problem-solving and came up with a theatrical costume design concept that one of the most original and creative ones our directors have ever seen. Abbie will compete in State May 7th and 8th. #CardinalProud

Aspiring in Computing Award
Congratulations to Annie Zhu, Maggie Schwierking, and Maggie Lin for being recognized by the National Center for Women & Information Technology with the Award for Aspirations in Computing. They were all honored by the NCWIT Houston Affiliate. Maggie Schwierking was also selected as a National Honorable Mention, and Annie was selected as one of only 40 National Award Winners!

Track and Field Highlights
Zain Hamdani broke the school record in the 1600 which has been standing since 2014. New School Record 4:21.27. Watch the race here.
Olivia Dewey established a new personal best in the Pole Vault clearing 9 feet and 6 inches. Olivia medaled at St. Agnes Track meet. Pictured above on the left.

STAAR English 1 and English 2 Exams
This week a detailed communication was sent to families through Remind and School Messenger to families. It can also be viewed here.
In order to plan safely, we need to know whether or not students are coming to campus to take their English STAAR EOC exams. Below are the registration forms for the English 1 and English 2 STAAR EOC exams. Forms for the remaining STAAR exams will be sent out in mid-April. Please complete this form by Sunday, March 28, 2021.
Safety Procedures During Testing:
- Students' temperatures will be checked upon entering the school. Any student with a fever will not be able to test.
- All faculty and students will wear their masks properly, at all times.
- Students will sit 6 feet apart from each other.
- There will be no more than 12 students assigned to a classroom.
- Only the students that are taking the STAAR exam will be on campus.

Apply to be on Yearbook
Being on the Carillon staff is a commitment not to be taken lightly. The applicant should understand that yearbook is a student-run publication and, as such, involves many extra hours outside of school, especially near deadlines. It is important that the applicant also understands that he/she must attend a summer camp held in late July/early August. Because of COVID-19, this camp will likely take place at/near Bellaire.

NHS Applications
The Bellaire Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) invites only sophomore and junior students having a 3.7 grade point average or higher to complete the Candidate Information Sheet. Potential candidates were sent an informational email to their HISD email address.
Requirements and Information:
- NHS is a society of high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate four qualities for membership: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
- NHS requires several commitments from its members:
- Commitment to active participation in the Chapter’s activities, including attending meetings.
- Commitment to tutoring students (3 hours a semester).
- Commitment to volunteering through the Chapter’s service opportunities (6 hours a semester).
- Commitment to having academic integrity and honesty.
- Commitment to maintaining the highest academic standards by consistently maintaining a GPA of 3.7 or higher.

Houston Regional Japanese Speech Contest
While the contest could not be live-streamed as scheduled on February 20, Japanese language learners from Bellaire took on the challenge of capturing their speeches on video. Congratulations to the winners! 1st and 2nd place winners move onto the Texas State Speech Contest on March 13.

CILS Testing Center
Bellaire High School is now a recognized Certification Center endorsed by the University of Siena, Italy.
This means that students can now see their skills and knowledge in Italian recognized at an international level and can take at our campus the CILS test usually administered by universities and colleges.
In 2020 Bellaire High School became the only CILS Center in a public high school in the United States. BHS students can now register for the June 10 exam session. The deadline to register is April 30.
On the page www.tinyurl.com/houstoncils you can find information about the exam, registration, and fees. Students of Italian receiving Title I waivers have access to a scholarship that will cover the registration costs.

Food Drive
The Italian National Honor Society and Food For Houston are joining forces for their next Food Drive-Thru, on March 27 from 11:00 to 1:00pmon the Circle Drive on 5100 Maple Street, Bellaire TX 77401.
There are also cans for collection at school in front of room 213 for face-to-face students. You can drop your donations until March 26 at school or join us for
the Food Drive Thru.

NHS Tutoring
The Bellaire Chapter of the National Honor Society announces, “Tutes for Studes,” an on-line tutorial service available for ALL Bellaire students (9th to 12th grade) needing assistance in math, English, social studies, foreign languages, and the sciences. Our tutors are NHS members who have already taken the course, whether it’s an IB/AP course or is a course in another curriculum and did well in it. Here is how you access the service:
2. Click on “Students” at the top of the home page.
3. Fill in the tutoring request form. You must give NHS 24-hour notice so that we can arrange for a tutoring session.
4. You will be paired with an NHS tutor, who will notify you of the time and date for the tutoring session. A full session lasts 30 minutes and takes place during Cardinal Hour. No tutoring is done before or after school or on weekends.
5. All tutoring sessions will be recorded.

Financial Aid
Although it is passed the January 15th deadline, it is still not too late to apply for any extra funding. Consider applying for the FAFSA for federal aid. If your student is undocumented, then the TASFA is the best option for Texas state funds for Texas colleges. If you have applied and need to clear verification, we’re here to help with that, as well. For assistance with this and other financial aid questions, join us for open financial aid advising on Financial Aid Friday from 12:20 to 1:30.
11th Grade Spring College Center Meeting
Next Wednesday, March 10th at 3 PM, the College Center will be hosting the 11th Grade Spring College Center Meeting. This will be a continuation of the Fall meeting and will prepare juniors for the rest of the spring semester and what to do during the summer to be set up for success during senior year. Please review the 11th Grade Fall College Center Meeting. This was held back in October 2020.
