Propel Schools Continues Conversations
At October's Social Justice Forum
Throughout the past year, Propel families, scholars and the Propel team have witnessed so much that has impacted us in many ways. We experience trauma as we continue working through a life-changing global pandemic, as we witness unimaginable acts of violence and the unjustifiable deaths of Black people. Social unrest is gripping our country. This confluence of events swirls around us and we must confront each element to find positive and sustainable solutions.

As an organization, we have a voice and the opportunity to make change. We too must ensure we are educated on all things impacting the communities that Propel serves. We have to use our authentic voice and our active listening skills through these courageous conversations as we aim to be an anti-racist organization. We will purposefully work toward bringing about lasting change and a deeper understanding.

Watch Jeffrey Dessources, a dynamic public educator, author, and emcee of Haitian descent, depict the importance of being culturally responsive in the field of student development and what we need to do to better recognize how to do so:
At Propel Schools, we are actively engaging our team members and encouraging all to grow and nurture a culture that champions diversity, equity and inclusion. Just over a week ago, Danielle Parson, Senior Director of Community Affairs, and Nia Stanley, Residency/ Induction Specialist, hosted our second successful staff Social Justice Forum.

As hundreds of Propel team member gathered virtually, important conversations took place regarding race, how we teach in a culturally responsive manner and how to dismantle inequity in all of our systems. Before attending the session, team members were asked to complete some pre-work items to help everyone get the most out of the forum. This included watching "The Enduring Myth of Black Criminality" and reading "History Class and the Fictions About Race in America."
Propel Hazelwood Offers Free
Community Flu Shot Clinic
In partnership with Duquesne University Center for Pharmacy Care, Propel Hazelwood held a free community flu shot clinic on October 7 & 14. Health care professionals administered flu shots as part of this free service that was open to members of the community, ages three and older. Complimentary face masks were provided by Global Links and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. An additional thanks goes out to our State Representative Jake Wheatley for providing voter registration information for the upcoming election.
