Franklin Elementary School - Gr. K-4
Franklin Elementary wants to send out a huge THANK YOU to Target, Dairy Queen, and McDonalds for their donations to "I Love to Read Month"! The kids truly enjoyed their prizes!
Ms. Hill's fourth grade class had an egg hunt on March 30, in lieu of the upcoming spring break. The eggs were hidden in the classroom for the students to find. The egg hunt was arranged by student teacher, Ms. Schlotec.
Mrs. Pellinen's distance learning kindergarten class has been busy in art - learning about constellations and creating their own "wishful" constellation!

SPRING TIME MEANS CHICK TIME
Mrs. Tieberg’s first grade class is eagerly awaiting the arrival of baby chicks. Thanks to paraprofessional Nikki Long, the class is able to learn and watch the development of baby chicks. Nikki brought in about 60 eggs to be hatched in an incubator. After seven days in the incubator, Nikki, along with the help of every student, checked every egg to see if a baby chick was growing inside. The process is known as candling. There are 37 eggs in the incubator now and the students have until April 6th to wait for hatching. There are 7 different kinds of chicks and everyone is excited to see what variety of chicks pop out. After they hatch, they will stay in the classroom for a few days before they make their way to new homes. Along the way, the class has learned how the chicks are developing and will be writing about the process after the chicks are born. It is very EGGciting!
Debating which came first - the chicken or the egg?
Waiting so patiently!

TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
Three students from each grade in Grades 5-8 were selected to "Make the Cut" in Gilbert during the month of March. The character trait they were focused on was responsibility! Here are the photos of the socially distanced ceremony! Thanks to all of our students for being responsible!

LEARNING IN ACTION: Roosevelt students have been busy finding ways to incorporate learning into everything they can!
Mr. Cremers's 6th grade class went on a walk around Silver Lake for over an hour to do some spring cleaning of the lakeshore. When they returned to class, they were able to calculate their results - working on RATES for their math lesson. On their 75-minute walk, the 6th grade class picked up 1,264 cans, chip bags, boxes and other trash! The rates they figured out were that they picked up 54 pieces of garbage per kid and also as a class picked up 13 pieces of trash per minute during their walk around Silver Lake.
Fourth graders in Mrs. Morley's class were learning about Electricity and Magnetism. They were working in groups to explore and put together simple electric circuits. In this lab, students learned about the three main parts of a circuit, and also learned about the different types of circuits. They learned that a circuit must be closed in order for current to flow. It was very exciting when they could get their light bulb to turn on! It was their indication that they wired their circuit correctly!
Meanwhile, fourth graders in Mrs Thyen's class explored the Midwest Region and made some amazing dioramas. The United States Regions are one of the topics covered in 4th grade Social Studies. Students at the Roosevelt usually finish out the Regions Unit with a diorama project which depicts a state or landmark from a certain region. Here are some examples of dioramas based on the Midwest and created by students in Mrs. Thyen's class. Included are the Bean in Chicago, Indianapolis Speedway, Gooseberry Falls, The Ironman Statue, the Hockey Hall of Fame, Lambeau Field, Split Rock Lighthouse, and the Cave of Mounds in Wisconsin.
This Ironman looks just like the real thing!
You can almost hear the sounds of the game!

CREATIVITY IN ART

David Kangas is a junior at Eveleth-Gilbert High School, and he's taking Deborah Custer's Clay and Sculptural Art class. In his spare time, David likes to shape wax, and he put his talents to impressive use creating this scene. David says he really likes to make designs that feature a scene within a scene, like the waterfall and treescape within the sphere on this figure. The bonsai tree on top and the scene within the sphere were inspired by the fantasy novels David reads. David said he contemplated putting the water on the outside of the design, but ultimately decided to keep the scene inside separate from the outer portion of the project.

Beautiful work!
The artist, David Kangas.
What a creative and timeless piece!
Virginia High School - Gr. 7-12
WELCOMING BACK STUDENTS AND SNOWEEK
On Monday, March 8th, Virginia High School students returned to in person learning and were greeted at the door by Student Council members. Upon entering the building they were transported directly into SnoWeek festivities. What better way to welcome everyone back to school than decorated halls, dress up days, school spirit, fun activities, and of course, SnoWeek royalty? Yes, COVID pushed things back a bit and made the activities different, but the Student Council members really knocked it out of the park with their out-of-the-box thinking! This year events were spread out over two weeks with each grade participating in a grade specific outdoor activity. Appropriate for SnoWeek, mother nature even cooperated by dropping fresh snow for the junior class activity of sled races!

One thing that didn't change was the crowning of Senior and Freshman SnoWeek royalty and student performances, which were creatively presented both live and virtually. A crowd favorite performance was Senior Wyatt Prout on the ukulele performing Karma by AJR with support from Chase Powell, Drake Bucholz and Mr. Krage. Congratulations to this year's SnoWeek Royalty; Queen Jayda Westerbur, King Caden Croft, Princess Aynsley Erickson and Prince Luke Hecimovich.

BLIZZARD OF GIVING
It may be Spring, but Virginia Schools are experiencing a blizzard. A Blizzard of Giving that is! Students posted snowflake donation bags along the entrance walls of each of the Virginia schools requesting donation items such as clothing, masks, non-perishable food, and restaurant gift cards. The event runs until April 22nd and all donated items will go directly into the hands of our students in need. This event is sponsored by the VHS Clubs United with assistance from Youth in Action.
Clubs United Members; A. Tollefson, S. Stocke, T. Hiltunen, J. Stocke and C. Stocke.
Don't forget that Wednesdays will move to in-person learning on April 7
for all students.
