Greetings!
Happy Summer! I hope you are able to slow down a bit, spend precious moments with family and friends, and enjoy the start of summertime.
We know, though, that the living isn't always easy. Too many families struggle with food and housing insecurity, are impacted by the digital divide, or face hate and discrimination at work, in business, or just walking down the street.
LA Civil Rights was created for those Angelenos - and to create a more just city. While I hope you enjoy some summer fun, we will be building our Office of Racial Equity, Discrimination Enforcement, as well as our future office space where Angelenos can go to get help, seek services, or hold community meetings.
We'll also have fun, too - with our Youth Art Jam, Pride parades and more that you can read about below - and enjoy every moment we get to spend with LA communities.
Keep the faith and keep the fight,
- Capri Maddox
Executive Director,
Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department

Rocking LA's Diversity at the Youth Art Jam
|
On June 30, we hosted the LA for All Youth Art Jam, a virtual creative space for young and diverse artists to create community, celebrate diversity, and build solidarity across cultures and experiences. The event, emceed by B Mike Rob and Dejay Boss, included celebrity chefs, local artists, youth poets & filmmakers, and LBGTQ activists. Huge thank you to Councilmember Kevin de León for sharing your support and personal story at the jam, Nason Buchanan and the DMTL organization for helping organize, and all of our artists, young people, and participants who joined the event and are overcoming hate and adversity through community & creativity.

LA Civil Rights was thrilled to join Valley Pride on June 26th to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month with folks from across the San Fernando Valley. We came ready with posters and t-shirts and distributed nearly everything we had to the Pride car parade. Thank you to Mayor Eric Garcetti, GLSEN Los Angeles and State Senator Bob Hertzberg for hosting this fun and family-friendly Pride event. See more pictures from the day below!

We hope everyone had a safe, inclusive, and fun LGBTQ+ Pride Month!

HRC Report on Policing & The Black Community
|
|
The City of Los Angeles' Human Relations Commission released a report on policing and the Black community in Los Angeles. This report spanned three years of conversations, and includes direct quotes from 92 community members of South LA, who provided recommendations and insights for improving LAPD's relationship with the Back community.
Recommendations include developing an equity mission and goals within LAPD, expanded dialogues with the Black community, expanding the Community Safety Partnership Bureau (CSPB) model to all bureaus and officers, strategic transfer of certain calls on homeless intervention, mental health and wellness checks, drug intervention and more.
Thank you to lead author Commissioner Courtney Morgan-Greene, and everyone who participated in the dialogues.
