Fourteen GGUSD Schools Earn Statewide PBIS Awards

Fourteen GGUSD schools received awards for excellence in implementing PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). PBIS helps schools promote positive behavior expectations, engage students in their school community and foster a positive school culture and climate. The 2022 awards from the California PBIS Coalition recognizes schools that are among the best in applying PBIS strategies schoolwide to increase positive student behavior.

GGUSD schools that received Platinum Awards include Faylane Elementary School, Heritage Computer Science Academy, Sunnyside Elementary School, McGarvin Intermediate School, and Santiago High School. Hazard Elementary School received a Gold Award and schools that received a Silver Award include Bryant Arts Academy, Clinton Elementary School, Excelsior Elementary School, Gilbert Elementary School, Lawrence Elementary School, Patton Elementary School, Rosita Elementary School, and Violette Elementary School.

Six GGUSD Students Named National Merit Semi-Finalists

Six students from GGUSD were named semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program – a prestigious recognition earned by less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide. Approximately 200 Orange County students earned the distinction.

National Merit Semifinalists from GGUSD included Catherine Palm from Bolsa Grande High School; Kandice U. Nguyen and Uyen Nguyen from Garden Grove High School; Anne N. Do, Caden Guardino and Cayden Morris from Pacifica High School.

National Merit Semifinalists represent those students who scored highest on the PSAT from each state. Next, students will submit a scholarship application, endorsement from a high school official, essay, and SAT scores.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is designed to recognize students with extraordinary academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college courses. Semifinalists are eligible to compete for 7,250 scholarships worth an estimated $28 million.

Staff Sergeant Castillo has served in the Marine Corps for 11 years and is currently stationed at Camp Pendleton. She is deploying overseas this week and will miss the majority of Eli's senior year, but the Garden Grove High School football program assured her they will provide extra support and guidance to Eli while she's gone. Thank you Staff Sergeant Castillo for your service and dedication to our country.

Recently Garden Park students and staff celebrated Dot Day. With a focus on personal growth and creativity students read the story “The Dot”, written by author Peter H. Reynolds, and teachers taught a variety of lessons encouraging students to trust in their own abilities and inspire creativity. Students learned that bravery through art sparks one’s confidence and the belief in oneself.
