National Night Out Across District 4
On Tuesday, I went to a number of National Night Out celebrations across District 4 and spent quality time with residents (and ate some great food). Hundreds of residents came out to enjoy food, games, and the company of their neighbors. Visiting 5 different neighborhoods gave me the opportunity to interact with families from all over the district. Being in the community is my favorite part of this job and I can’t stress how valuable your input is. Being able to have conversations with my D4 neighbors helps to shape my priorities as your representative at City Hall.
I'm looking to add more National Night Out events each year. If your neighborhood would like to hold an event, please reach out to my office and we can help support you. Again, thank you all for coming out!
Protecting Noble Park: A Marathon, Not A Sprint
At the community meeting last Friday, July 29th, we shared the next step in our plan to find a more appropriate site for EIHC in District 4 and reverse the decision from the June 21st council meeting to place the facility at the park on Noble Ave. I am delighted to report that we accomplished what we needed to today at the Rules Committee meeting. I want to thank everyone who came out in person, commented on Zoom, and sent letters of support. It was your passionate commentary regarding what this park means to you that softened the stance of my colleagues who have been focused on speed. The rules committee voted unanimously to approve my memo.
What does this mean? It means my colleagues on the Rules Committee agreed with my assessment that taking parkland away from a community to build interim housing requires more information, more discussion, and should come back to council for reconsideration. While this is an important first step, the Rules Committee alone cannot pause planning for the site because it is a subcommittee of the full council, and only the full council can change direction from a previous vote. But the Rules Committee is the first step toward getting the June 21st council decision reconsidered and today’s vote accomplished that very important step.
| |
My staff and I will continue to work with the City Attorney and city staff to help them come to the same conclusion our community has - that this is dedicated parkland, and it should be protected from development. In fact, during the Rules Committee meeting this afternoon, one of our staff located a definition of improvements in the City municipal code, and we have already shared that information internally.
I want to reiterate that together we are making progress to a better outcome for our unhoused neighbors and for our neighborhoods. This was the next step, and it will take more wins like today before the process is over. I thank you for your patience and partnership as we move forward.

HANDS-ON ART IS BACK AT THE CHILDREN'S DISCOVERY MUSEUM
Let’s practice our observations skills by playing a game of I Spy while we draw together!
Artists call the process of using a picture to guide their artwork “using a reference photo.” Using a reference photo is all about observation, and it helps artists choose the right colors, shapes, textures, and proportions in their drawings. You and your family can practice your observation skills by playing a game of I Spy while you draw together!
| |
When an artist draws from a reference photo, they might ask themselves: What colors do I see in this photo? Where is the photo the darkest and where is it the lightest? What shapes do I see? What kind of textures do I see? It can feel a bit like a game of I Spy! Let’s practice our observation skills and make some art!
Hands-on art activities are back! Join us in the Neiman Art Studio here at the Children's Discovery Museum
