As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. – Psalm 103:13

Once in a while we will sit on the couch as a family and laugh at old videos stored in our phones. We laugh at our out-of-style clothes, our funny dances, and our silly actions. But there is one video in our family that always emerges as the favorite. Years ago, I was seriously considering buying an old car. It was cheap and needed some work, but I thought that if I could drive it for a couple of years it would be worth it. Since my boys were young I would always talk to them about decisions and get their honest advice. . .It was always honest. One evening, I was showing the boys the car online and discussing all the possibilities. My youngest son Brady was lying in bed and was passionate about looking at other vehicles before buying the car. So, I did what every loving father does, I began secretly recording on my phone. . .
(watch it again and just focus on his eyebrows)

I have watched this video over and over for years and it never gets old. Yes, I was prodding, yes I was having fun, but when I asked the question, “What if I buy the car and it explodes?” Brady’s surprised look and statement said it all. “Well then it’s your fault for buying it!” It was as if he was saying, “If anything happens to this car, there is no one to blame but you!” He is actually right. Dads make decisions all the time; some good, some bad. One decision may bless the family, while another may harm it, but decisions for your families must be made. With a smile on my face, I often tell young men before they get married, “It is always your fault, just be ok with that.”

We have a Heavenly Father who made a decision we cannot even begin to think of. He gave his one and only Son Jesus to die for my bad decisions, your bad decisions, and even our children’s bad decisions (yes, those too). Our loving Father chose to send His Son because of our bad decisions. Dads, there is a big difference between us and our Heavenly Father- he never makes the wrong decision. His ways are higher than our ways and He knows exactly what is going on in our lives. Incredibly, God has an unwavering plan for each of us and our families in His timing and in His divine plan. God’s plans may not always make sense to us, but we know and trust His plans are the best, not only for us, but for our families.

Fathers are not perfect like God, but He forgives us, like you forgive your children. No matter where you have been or what you have done, our Lord invites you to come to him and say, “It is my fault, forgive me Lord” and He promises he will.

Fathers, you are incredible! Remarkably, our Lord’s Word uses your compassion as an example of how God shows compassion for us. Fathers, your compassion for your children is to be commended. Thank you for loving your children with compassion and care knowing your Heavenly Father knows the plans for you and for them.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." – Jeremiah 29:11

Join us Sunday as we celebrate our dads and discover God’s BIGGER plans.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
