March 19, 2021
Dear Peter Hobart Community,

I grew up on 38th street in south Minneapolis. I can't count the amount of times that I was either in, or walked past Cup Foods on the corner of 38th and Chicago. My middle school was not too far away and oftentimes, I would walk home down 38th, past Cup Foods. Reflecting on my childhood and recognizing that the murder of George Floyd has impacted me, my family and my city in an immense way, I can't help but question what I would have needed if that event happened on a day when I walked home from school?

In light of the murders that took place in Atlanta on Tuesday night, I can't help but question what our students/families/colleagues of Asian descent would be feeling and thinking right now? And subsequently, what would they need?

What I'm landing on is actually pretty simple.
I would need to feel safe, loved, seen and heard.

As the Chauvin trial progresses, and as more information about the Atlanta murders comes to light, please know that our staff will do their best to provide our students with:

  • an environment that they feel safe in
  • a place where the adults show that we love them
  • a place where the value of their lives is seen
  • a place where their voices are heard

This is our hope everyday here at Peter Hobart but in trying times, I believe this needs to be restated often to best support our students and families. Please reach out with any questions, comments or concerns.

International-Mindedness

International-mindedness is a view of the world in which people see themselves connected to the global community and assume a sense of responsibility towards humanity. It is an awareness of the interrelatedness of all nations and peoples, and is a recognition of the complexity of these relationships.

Internationally minded people appreciate and value the diversity of peoples, cultures and societies in the world. They make efforts to learn more about others and to develop empathy and solidarity towards them to achieve mutual understanding and respect

The concept of international-mindedness is built on diverse perspectives to generate a sense of common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.

News from Health Services
A Message from Health Services Regarding COVID-19

In an effort to keep our community’s COVID-19 spread down, the District will continue to follow guidelines set in place by the Minnesota Department of Health. Although COVID-19 rates have decreased, Hennepin County continues to have high levels of community transmission (defined by the Minnesota Department of Health as greater than 10 cases per 10,000).

Students should not come to school if they are ill or if anyone in their household is ill. The District continues to follow a 10 day isolation period for individuals with COVID illness symptoms and a 14 day quarantine for those exposed to COVID-19 or exposed to a household member with symptoms of COVID-19.

We ask that student illness symptoms are reported to the school health office. Health office staff will review exclusion guidance and determine isolation and/or quarantine dates. The illness exclusion document that is used in our schools can be viewed here

Free COVID testing locations can be found here.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students, staff, and community safe.
CDC Recommendations Regarding Spring Break Travel
The District continues to prioritize the health and safety of staff, students and families and the ability to provide as much in-person learning as possible. The District asks that staff and families consider CDC recommendations around travel as we approach Spring Break (March 29-April 2).

The CDC is currently recommending no travel at this time, given that travel increases the chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. If staff and families do decide to travel, they are reminded to continue observing all prevention measures including maintaining six feet of distance from others whenever possible, masking consistently, using proper hand hygiene, and testing and quarantining when appropriate.

The CDC also has the following recommendations after you return from traveling:

  • Get tested 3-5 days after returning home from traveling
  • Stay home and self-quarantine for a full seven days after traveling, even if you receive a negative test result
  • If you choose to not get tested, stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after traveling
  • Avoid being around people who are at an increased risk of severe illness for 14 days after traveling
  • If you choose to follow these quarantine recommendations, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible.

Following this guidance gives us the best chance to keep our schools open and our staff, students and families safe.
MDH Recommends Testing for Children & Families Every 2 Weeks
Now that students have returned to in person learning at our elementary schools and hybrid learning at our secondary schools, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) encourages every family to get tested for COVID-19. Current recommendations from MDH say that any student who spends time near people outside their immediate household should get tested every two weeks, through the end of the school year.

Testing has never been easier – you can visit a community testing site, order an at-home test kit, or get tested through your health care provider. All options are quick and free to you.

You can sign your entire family up to get tested at the same time at a community testing site. If someone in your family prefers to speak in another language besides English, in-person or language line assistance is available. Test sites are doing everything they can to make sure sites are clean, safe, and comfortable for everyone.

Teachers, school staff, and coaches are already getting tested regularly. We owe it to them to do the same. By wearing a mask and getting tested regularly, we can help limit the spread of COVID-19 and keep our schools and sports open.

Visit Getting Tested for COVID-19 or contact your health care provider to schedule an appointment.
There is free COVID testing available at the Park Nicollet Campus over by Miracle Mile Center just off of Excelsior Blvd. https://www.healthpartners.com/covid-19/testing/

Food Resources
Free Groceries for Families Who Qualified for Free or Reduced-Price Meals During the 2020-21 School Year

Families in our district who qualify for free or reduced-price meals are now eligible for additional emergency nutritional benefits offered from the Federal government.

These benefits are provided by Federal “Pandemic-Electronic Benefit Transfer” funds (P-EBT); a temporary food benefit to families with children who would have received free and reduced-price meals if schools were open. These additional benefits may be retroactive to September 2020, depending on when eligibility for free or reduced-meals is determined.

Families who qualify will receive separate electronic grocery cards for each student in the family. The cards would include funds (approximately $6.82/day) for each day your student was in distance learning during the school year. Cards will be mailed from the State of Minnesota in late March 2021.

If you have already qualified for free or reduced-price meals earlier this school year, you don’t need to do anything because your family will automatically receive these new Federal nutritional benefits.

However, if your family income has been affected by the pandemic and you have not completed an Application for Education Benefits (free or reduced-price meal application) for this school year, please complete and submit your application by Feb. 28, 2021.

Box Tops for Education is changing the way
we can earn cash for our school!

Over the summer, participating brands began to change their packaging from the traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label. Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt. If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, make sure to send them to school. We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire. Better yet, you can “double dip” during the packaging transition by clipping traditional Box Tops AND scanning your store receipt containing participating products. Download the app on iTunes or Google Play. See products & learn more about the box tops app at BTFE.COM.

Thank you for your efforts in helping our school earn money through the Box Tops program!
