University News for Faculty and Staff
Dear Faculty and Staff,

As you may know Karen Ballinger and many volunteers have organized and made about one thousand reusable cloth masks for use by students, staff, and faculty.

Masks have been handed out in the Argiro Student Center for several weeks but not everyone has been going there. If you still need a mask, please email Tom Brooks with your name and MIU box number and we will put a mask for you in your MIU mailbox.

Please protect everyone and wear your mask whenever you are out in public and please be vigilant on social distancing.  If you visit Argiro, please also remember that it is now required to wear a mask while inside.

We all thank Karen and the many volunteers for making these masks!

Thanks,
Tom Brooks

Please include your box number and whether you have a small jawline or need a larger side.

COVID-19 Test Results on Campus

Dear Members of the MIU Community,

We will continue to keep you updated on the latest situation regarding COVID-19 on our campus.

As we previously advised on June 1, widespread testing has identified several workers who work on campus, but who reside off-campus, who tested positive for COVID-19 over the last month.

While the total number of cases has increased a bit, all those who have tested positive are either without symptoms, are recovering, or have recovered. They have all been in isolation in their off-campus residences, and will not be permitted to return to campus until they are without symptoms for 14 days,   and have had a subsequent negative COVID test.

No campus residents have tested positive for COVID-19 to date

All those in the affected worker units, whether or not having symptoms, have been tested, and regular retests are being administered. Any testing positive are placed in isolation.

The State of Iowa, while holding steady, is still hovering near its assumed peak — so this is not the time to let our guard down.

We therefore encourage everyone on the MIU Campus to remain vigilant, to practice social distancing, and to wear face coverings while in public. Since June 1, masks have been required in the Argiro Student Center and in all major administrative and academic buildings.

We continue to urge campus residents to stay on campus and avoid going into town as much as possible.

We are closely monitoring the situation in Fairfield and across Iowa, and will continue to make adjustments to our policies in order to ensure the safety of our MIU community.

With best wishes,
President Hagelin

The Basis of Strong Immunity is Balance - The Ayurvedic Perspective by Alan Marks, CEO, April 27, 2020
Ayurveda is the science of balance. The focus on symptoms or particular illnesses circulating at any given time is not the primary focus of Ayurveda. It is certainly concerned with these, but rather it addresses the core of health, that which allows illness to take place in the first place – imbalance. Ayurveda encourages daily, life-long attention to maintaining balance. When our body is in balance, when our doshas are in balance, we naturally respond in the most powerful way to our environment, whether it be stressful situations, environmental pollution, or pathogens. Ayurveda talks of the “seed and land theory” – if the land is fertile the seed will grow. If the body is out of balance, stress, or pathogens will have a place to take root.

How is balance achieved?
First, digestion. The best place to start is with digestion.

Get ready to step into summer! ️

We hope you are taking time to get outdoors and be physically active as the weather begins to warm up across Iowa. Whether you like to run, bike or walk – exercise is an effective tool to improve our physical and mental health!
How do I practice social distancing outdoors?
Studies continue to show regular exercise – particularly walking – dramatically lowers your risk for heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes and weight-related health issues.
With recreation facilities currently closed or operating at limited capacity due to COVID-19, many people are engaging in recreational activities outside.

This is causing some outdoor spaces like parks, trails, sports fields/courts, and even neighborhood sidewalks to become increasingly crowded. This increase makes the  CDC's six-feet social distancing recommendations  harder to maintain.

Outdoor spaces offer options for exercise and recreation, but they must be used responsibly to limit the spread of COVID-19. There are some simple tips that can help you and others stay healthy when they are spending time outside – these tips may not always be fun to follow, but they are very easy to do! Stay safe and practice social distancing outdoors with these tips:

The Critical Call for Consciousness:
Education in the Time of COVID-19
Our end-of-the-year fundraising goal is to raise $200,000. A few generous donors will match every donation you make from now until June 30, dollar for dollar.

We will invest these matching dollars, continuing to adapt to the needs of the COVID situation. This includes creating three possible scenarios for the fall—in person, online, and a combination of both—providing programs to enrich student experience, as well as support recruitment and retention of top notch faculty.
“Your school community has an incredible leg up on most of the rest of the world right now in that you have an existing routine for folks to stay grounded and mindful. Hang in there.”
—Head of prestigious Midwestern private school

At Maharishi School we’ve continued to prioritize consciousness by investing our most precious non-renewable resource—time. Our students in grades 5-12 have twice daily Transcendental Meditation and yoga—to optimize their brain coherence, reduce stress, and to connect with that silent core that is waiting within each of us.

Lynn Shelton on Overcoming Her Darkest Moment on Set
In an interview in March for a book, the filmmaker spoke about her despair while shooting “Your Sister’s Sister,” and how she ultimately dealt with it.

By  Michael Dunaway May 20, 2020

What helped you get through it?
Meditation is a really important piece. I started by reading every book I could and trying out different practices. At the time there were no apps.

But somebody gave me  “Catching the Big Fish”  by David Lynch. I read that book [which discusses Transcendental Meditation] and I remember saying, Oh my God, I want that. He talks about how it affects his creativity, and I was really interested in that, too. I’ve always been interested in different states of consciousness, and I yearned to be in this other place that he described.

After directing “Laggies,” a studio film that brought her first decent paycheck, she tried Transcendental Meditation.

The very first time, I felt like I was on some sort of hallucinogenic drug trip. I got so high. It’s funny because I say high and deep at the same time, but it’s like flying in a deep way. I don’t even know how to explain it. It was so different than anything I’d ever experienced in any other form of meditation. That was it; I was hooked.

Shelton went on to practice twice daily for 20 minutes at a time, anywhere she could find a spot, even in a set trailer or a parked car.

And what does that time do for you?
It’s like this gigantic reset button. It’s like getting high twice a day with nothing but great side effects, no hangover. I will say it changes. Sometimes if I’m really stressed out and there’s a lot going on in my brain, I’ll go through the monkey mind thing, and I’ll gently have to return to the mantra.

I’m a pretty high-strung person, or I was. On the first shooting day, there’s fires to put out. It can get very stressful. And then you get that reset button. You’re just like, OK, I’m ready for the next part of the day.

For 34 years, this Delhi-based company has been using Ayurveda to cure diseases; Maharishi Ayurveda was founded by Anand Srivastava with an aim to rid people of their suffering through traditional medicines. After a span of 34 years, the company now clocks a turnover of Rs 75 crore and exports to the US, Europe, and other international markets. By  Palak Agarwal
India has a long history of using the age-old practice of Ayurveda to treat human ailments. Also known as the ‘mother of all healing systems’, Ayurveda was usually taught orally for thousands of years, and the knowledge has transcended through its followers. The beginning of Ayurvedic company Maharishi Ayurveda also harks back to the time when Swami Brahmanand Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath, preached that ‘life is bliss’, and that ‘life reflects itself in suffering and stress when people do not accord with nature.’ Maharishi Mahesh Yogi took it upon himself to spread this message, along with propagating the Vedic sciences like Yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda.

Incorporated in 1986, Maharishi Ayurveda was created by Anand Srivastava with an aim to rid people of their suffering, and thereby, create a ‘disease-free society’. In an interaction with SMBStory, Anand says,

“I connected with Maharishi Ji in the 1970s and was a follower of his teachings. My inclination towards Ayurveda started from there seeing the profundity of this science. Hence, with Maharishi Ji’s blessings, I thought to spread
