From the President ...
What do we see in our mind’s eye when we think about on Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day?

My immediate thought is of the Six Million dead: 2/3rds of Europe’s Jewish population. Many other groups were also targeted by the Nazi regime: gentiles, Jehovah’s Witnesses, political prisoners, Roma, homosexuals, those with mental or physical disabilities, Poles, Russians and anyone deemed racially inferior.

Most of us know about the horrors of the camps: the horrendous living conditions, the slave labor, constant hunger, cold, fear, beatings and mass extermination. But how much do we know about the days and months after the guards were gone and prisoners were free to go? What happened after liberation?

More than 250 thousand survivors went to DP (Displaced Persons) Camps, which were in existence from 1945-1953.
Bronia Merlin, mother of Reba Alper, was one of those people.
Reba was born in the Feldafing DP camp, 20 miles outside of Munich Germany.

There were multiple DP camps across Germany, Austria and Italy. How long did people stay? What was life like there?

Join us this evening at 7:00 pm when Rabbi James Apple, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple of Israel, sits down with Reba and her husband Jon to discuss her family’s experience and this legacy of the Holocaust.

Fully compassionate God on high:
To our six million brothers and sisters
murdered because they were Jews,
grant clear and certain rest with You
in the lofty heights of the sacred and pure
whose brightness shines like the very glow of heaven.

Source of mercy:
Forever enfold them in the embrace of Your wings;
secure their souls in eternity.
Adonai: they are Yours.
They will rest in peace. Amen.

Shabbat Shalom,
Michelle

Thursday, April 8, 7:00 pm - On ZOOM. 1 hour Adult Education session on the Shoah with Rabbi Apple and Reba Alper.  "What happens to concentration camp survivors when they are suddenly told that they are free to go. This happened to Reba's mother, Bronia.  Reba and Jon Alper will share their experiences."

We know about the Nazis and their concentration camps. What happened to those suddenly set free? One of those was Reba Alper's mother, Bronia. Reba was born in a displaced persons camp. Now it is Reba and Jonny's turn to talk about their experiences. If there is time, feel free to ask Reba or Jonny any questions that pertain to the subject matter.

Putting Out
the
Welcome Mat
The goal of the Open Door Project is to make our synagogue an inviting and welcoming spiritual home for all Jews, including those in interfaith marriages or partnerships and those who are raising children in an interfaith home.

Our initial discussion group agreed there is a need for this project. We would now like to involve other Bnai Israel members whose families include persons of another faith, those who are raising Jewish children, and those who have grandchildren who are being raised Jewish (or not) in mixed faith homes.

Our next discussion group will be held on Wednesday April 14th, 7:00-8:00 pm via Zoom. Board member Rena Goldwasser will moderate. The groups will be limited to 10 participants per session and we will hold additional sessions as needed.

Please contact Rena at 960-490-0916 via text or phone, or email at simplythebest53@yahoo.com to sign up. You will be sent a Zoom link on the day of the event.
