Volunteers Needed: Amity Committee Co-Chairs

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Amity Committee Co-Chairs for the 2021- 2022 Academic Year

The Amity Committee helps coordinate and support six Spanish-speaking interns who come to assist teachers and students for a full school year. This is a year-round position with most work done in the spring (interviewing potential interns and recruiting host families) through summer when host families are confirmed and interns arrive just prior to the start of school.

Other main jobs include:
  • Serve as a coordinator between the Amity interns and the the school administration and teacher mentors.
  • Act as a school coordinator for Amity International, make sure paperwork is updated and turned in on time
  • Recruit, place interns with, and support host families
  • Recruit, manage and support liaisons (a person who works on the committee to help support individual interns)

We will have two open co-chair positions at the end of this school year that will have to be filled as the Amity interns are a critical part of our students Spanish immersion experience.

If you are interested in volunteering to co-chair the Amity Committee or have any questions, please contact our current co-chairs, Sara Henson and Kristen McSherry, at amity@puestadelsolpta.org

PTA Board Spotlight

Carmel Sasaki, Director of Events and VP of Membership

What grade/classroom is your child currently? My son Noah is in 3rd Grade with Sra. Hamouda

Current Role, and how long have you been in it? I have been Director of Events since 2019, and helped to fill a dual role as VP of Membership this school year.
What do you most like about your roles? Both use a lot of different skills, and so being open to being a "Jane" of All Trades is good. I love when all the smaller tasks come together, especially for an event.
What skills are helpful in this role and how much time do you usually spend in the role per week? Organization, and for this last year -- being flexible and the drive to just keeping going--just like what we do for our kids each day!

Many families may not even realize the PTA board was still hard at work this whole year, and none of us are immune to the struggles faced over this last year, with the pandemic, racial and social justice issues, our kids struggling with online school.  Through this, the PTA has continued to provide financial and other supports for teachers and the school, for activities like the Drama Club, organizing programs such as the Toy Maker and other online Field Trips, making new online Events like Bedtime Stories and Grow Your Mind, and soon 5th Grade Graduation.
We had to make BIG pivots this year. For example, it was apparent that the kids NEEDED things to do and just have some fun outlets. For many of us, it was a brand new world of doing things online. Just finding an online platform that would meet our needs was a struggle, but I think we have a good rhythm now. By the way, we'd love to bring on any other families interested in helping or for ideas, too (just give me an e-mail!).
What is something you do that may not seem obvious to others? I work a full-time job, and am on-call for a week every 2-3 weeks. Some parents may not think they have time to devote to PTA if they work or have other commitments, but there is the old adage which is "Many Hands Make Light Work" -  which is totally true. I get help from fellow board members, our committees, as well as parent/caregiver volunteers.
Name one of your family's favorite go-to places and why:  Normally, Hawaii -- the weather and relaxation, and I have family there. For now though, just a local (flat!) park like Robinswood or Surrey Downs is great.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor (or other treat)? Cookies and Cream Blizzard
