Cozumel Drift - Special Edition
Hola Amigo !

Well, you are really enjoying a weekly newsletter. So glad for that. At least we have some way of connecting with your smiling faces. This weeks topic - Sharks !
Sharks of Cozumel.....
It always amazes me, when a new student or diver, asks about seeing a shark. Most of the time, they are quite apprehensive... ok, scared to see one. They claim that they will Either pee in their wetsuit, or hide behind their spouse or sibling, or will walk on water if they see one. And yet, when they do see one, they are usually the fist one swimming closer to get a better look! I mean, I totally understand why... but a bit funny as well.

Cozumel is blessed to have at least 6 species of sharks that live or pass through our waters....
  • Nurse Shark - most common here in Cozumel
  • Black Tip Shark - occassionally sited
  • Grey Reef Shark - quite rare although the young can be seen
  • Lemon Shark - extremely, EXTREMELY rare to see
  • Whale Shark - Seasonal and most uncommon to see
  • Bull Shark - mostly in Playa but they peruse the northern tip of the island
  • Hammerhead - sited here every few years
SHARKS - we love them
There are many opportunities to see nurse sharks on the island. All others depend on Mother Nature! But they are seen here regularly. So, lets learn more about them !
It is not something that we regularly see. Nor do they even know much about it, for any of the species.

As a diver one of the frequent questions I’m asked is, “Aren’t you afraid of Sharks?” to which I usually reply, “No we actually go looking for them”.

Oh, the elusive Hammerhead shark….
“Let’s go diving and see one!”
“Ha! Yah right, in Cozumel?”
“Well of course!

Do you know what the largest fish in the ocean is? A whale? No. A Great White Shark? No. A Mola Mola / Sunfish? No.. It is a Whale Shark

Covid Update
Last Friday, we were told that this past weekend and this week is our peak week ! And boy are we hunkered down. Last Friday, curfew was changed to 5 pm to 5 am. That is tough, especially when our beautiful sunsets are at 7:15 now ! See......
OK, busted. That picture is from a while ago - see the cruise ship?!??! But that at least stays in our dreams !?!?!? (This picture is just for you Jan and Cathy !)

So we are locked down, because... and i quote this directly from the news conference that the mayor held last Friday, in anticipation that we can keep this under control, recover and prepare for Jun 1 opening for tourists. Cozumel is keeping the numbers down. If you Google the population on the island, you can find number anywhere from 86,000 to a 100,000 from a few years ago. And as of today, only 23 Covid cases on the island. So doing well. We are keeping our noses to the grind so that we are ready and waiting for you.

American Airlines is still flying in to the island, almost every single day. So, keep your dreams going and let's plan on a summer vacation ! It might be that you do have to fly American to get here. Don't let that stop you. A beautiful summer get away is worth it !
